"What was that all about?" Wade demanded frowning at his sister.
"Well she deserved it." Nina bit back. "I can't believe you got engaged to that slut."
"Watch your tongue Nina." Wade rebuked vehemently. "What do you have against Selya?"
"That woman seduced my husband!" Hushed gasps came from the table until they realised they've caught the attention of half the guests.
Wade stiffened for a moment before he shook with fury.
''I would think carefully about what you're saying Nina because you don't know what she's gone through.''
''What are you saying Wade ? I'm the one who got hurt by what she did. She almost destroyed my marriage!''
''I'd say it would've been better if that had happened because that husband of yours is a low life who doesn't deserve you, not your love or your devotion and definitely not your tears.''
''I can't believe you're siding with that slut, I'm your sister Wade.'' Nina demanded.
''And she's my fiancée!" Wade said it so fiercely and possessively that he was surprised with his own outburst, sure they were both pretending to be engaged but that didn't mean he would stand anyone talking badly about her much less condemn her for something that wasn't her fault at all.
''That woman cannot stay here.''
''Selya isn't going anywhere.''
''Children we should talk about this calmly,'' Helen Ashburn cut in saying something for the first time since she'd sat at the table.
''You talk to her mom because I will not tolerate anyone insulting my Selya.'' He said with a note of finality and then he was off in search of Selya.
Wade found her by the pond and was torn by her tear streaked face.
''I'm sorry about what my sister said.'' Selya's eyes went wide in surprise.
''You're not angry?'' she looked so unhappy and fragile that Wade wanted to do nothing more but pull her to him and soothe all of her pains.
''No.'' He said.
''I know it's not your fault at all, that scumbag lied to you and to my sister only she's too blind to see him for who he truly is.''
''Why are you doing this Wade? You should be on your sister's side, you should be trying to save her marriage so why?''
''Because I'm on the side of truth that's why.'' He said, angry at the fact that she didn't think she deserves better and Wade felt the need to protect her and shield her away from anything and anyone who would make even a single tear drop from her expressive eyes.
''I could've been lying.''
''You're not a liar.''
''You don't know that!'' She cried in frustration. Wade knew she was trying to make him keep his distance but hell if he'd be able to do that, not like this.
''Selya.'' Wade said calmly. ''We may not have known each other for long but I can say confidently that you're not the kind of person who would lie about something like that I mean you couldn't have been faking your breakdown.''
She finally gave up the pretence.
''I should've sensed he was lying through his teeth.'' She admitted bitterly.
