CHAPTER TWO

Selya had been too shocked to let a single tear drop from her eyes and so for the remainder of the weekend all she did was mope about the house much to Lizzy's chagrin. ''You know you're allowed to cry if you want to right, nobody's stopping you but please will you stop acting like a freaking zombie!''
Perhaps it'd be more bearable if she cried but the tears had refused to come and she felt as empty as an old house that is still standing on the outside but inside is ruined through and through. Some kind of force must be having a field day toying with her life. She had so many plans for the wedding but then like the puff of a smoke everything vanished.
Her mom's advice floated through her mind, "he's just like the rest of them Selya, I know that look from miles away and I can tell he's not the one, not to mention how far apart your worlds are. Stick to your kind my daughter they understand us better."
Her mother had had her own share of disastrous relationships and maybe that's why she was able to make a distinction, the first being her marriage to Selya's father David Williams who couldn't get away fast enough before she was born with an excuse that Selya's mother was holding him back. Others came and went and eventually she met Bradley James an African American mechanic who adored her to no end. "My Brad was a gem." Her mom would always say and sure enough he was, enough that they had fifteen years of blissful union until he died of aneurysm three years ago.
But who was her kind? Selya thought miserably. It definitely had nothing to do with her skin colour or where she came from either.
Nanpon who was her boyfriend in college only hooked up with Selya on a bet and Clark doesn't do marriage.
Her kind would be a man with a big heart with the capacity to love as much as he receives.
A man who finds her worthy enough to want to spend the rest of his life with her and fight for her against all odds.
A man who would see all of her qualities and not see her as just another curvy hot body.
Lizzy had to drag her out of the house on Sunday afternoon, with an excuse of going shopping and Selya found she could think clearly as soon as the fresh air hit her face, though she wouldn't admit it she was actually really glad Lizzy had forced her to come along.
The sun was warm and a light breeze whispered against her skin. She actually missed the hustle and bustle of the city.
''Try this one.''Lizzy shoved a little black dress her way Selya took one look at the black fuzzy dress and shook her head.
''No way am I trying this on, I'm not the one who decides to go shopping all of a sudden.''
''I'm not asking you to pay for it, I just said to try it on.'' Lizzy threw back in a matter-of-fact way and Selya knew there's no arguing with her so she finally decided to try the dress on. After much debate and arguing from Selya, Lizzy packed the black dress and a blue print dress for her. Leave it to Lizzy to discreetly try to replace the black dress Selya had ripped after her discovery of Gale's wife. She knew how much Selya adored that dress and Selya was grateful for the gesture but it brought back unwanted memories that were better off buried.
Selya took the shopping bag handed to her by the cashier and thanked her only to turn around and run smack into someone. She apologised hurriedly without looking up and turned to leave when she heard her name.
Selya stopped just shy of the door cursing her stars.
The clacking of heels sounded against the linoleum floors of the boutique and the woman was in front of her, an astonished look on her face.
''It really is you.''
''Hi Ashley.'' Tongue in cheek, Selya managed a pleasant smile. "Hey Ash it's always a pleasure to see you!"
''Look at you, wow you haven't changed at all!'' Selya caught the sarcastic undertone of her voice but smiled nonetheless.
''Yeah, it's...still old me.'' Not that you have any right to judge.
After careful perusal of her Selya could see the disapproving look in her eyes, the same look she had been slow to notice all those years ago and the consequences had been anything but pleasant.
''So what brings you here?'' last I heard you were cruising the French Riviera with your third husband. Selya itched to say that out loud.
''Oh I've moved here for good some three months ago the city is lovely I've missed it.'' Ashley gushed.
''I'm sure you do. um—we're in a bit of a hurry, I think we'll be on our way.'' Selya said hoping she got the message that they were not interested in any form of chit-chat.
''Please don't let me keep you.'' Ashley waved heavy lacquered fingers. ''Oh before I forget, I'm hosting a sort of reunion party for the girls tonight it'd be wonderful if you could make it.''
''Sure, why not? I'll be delighted to.'' As soon as those words left Selya's mouth she felt like throwing up.
''Good, I'll see you then. The girls would be thrilled.'' And by that she meant they'll have a good time laughing their butts off.
Whatever the hell made her agree to this?
She should've listened to Lizzy and never have accepted Ashley's invitation, though it's too late for regrets now.
The night was a disaster even before it had begun. Selya hated being thrust in the spotlight and that's exactly what Ashley had intended, to put her on the petri dish like an insect waiting to be studied and dissected. She made her look and feel like a loser who wasn't worth anybody's time and Selya hated her for it.
It didn't help that Ashley's husband who had one time been in love with Selya never missed the opportunity to caress or kiss his wife; every subtle squeeze of her fingers or a peck on her cheek mattered and every tiny gesture of affection they displayed to ward each other felt like it was done on purpose to her benefit and it didn't fail to remind her of her own failed relationships and a statement that Ashley had once made to her the week she started dating Bryan, "Stop aiming too high Selya, you'll never be as awesome as me." Now Ashley had just proved that point mainly with the fact that Bryan had gotten married to her instead of Selya.
Selya had never been spiteful towards anyone before but Ashley was just plain mean. Decidedly, Ashley had always been critical towards her in high school but Selya had been too caught up in all the rainbows and butterflies of their friendship to actually see what Ashley was doing to her, an eye opener came in the form of Gerald Pierce the most popular guy in school who was interested in Selya but Ashley wanted him for herself and that's when Ashley's attitude did a complete one-eighty and their friendship went down the drain to never be recovered.
Selya had hightailed out of the party but not without Ashley spotting the glittering diamond on her finger which Selya had slipped on on purpose to serve as an ammunition but at that moment when it seemed to be serving its purpose she was suddenly feeling like it was some big mistake. After that she outright turned down a ride from Ashley who insisted on dropping her off probably with hopes of prying out the name of her lucky man as they call him but Selya was in no mood for any kind of chit-chat, she was feeling overwhelmed and needed to clear her head which was why an hour later she found herself in a club downtown downing her fifth tequila shot.
