" Is everyone present?"

The Dean's voice filled the small room. The students nodded as we were lined horizontally, awaiting the seemingly important topic we were called for. There were six top students total: Brendan, Nathan, Kristen. Me and two others I didn't recognize. The Dean's voice stole me from my thoughts.

"As you all know, preparations for finals have begun. So I've called you top students to inform you of the format of your finals. Since you are the top students, your finals will be different from the rest."

We all looked from one to the other, confused at what was taking place. The Dean cleared his throat before he continued.

" Katherine, you can come out now."

I saw as a girl around the same age as me walked out from behind the curtain and presented herself in front of us, grinning as she greeted,

"Hi! Nice to meet you all!"

"Students, this is Katherine. She was a former student here at Pharen High and was also a top student. She transferred schools a while ago but has come on assignment."

I managed to hear someone near me gasp sharply, turning my head slightly to see Brendan. ' Does he know her?' I shrugged it off as I turned my attention back to the Dean.

"She will be given a month to choose one person to test. From there, you will both prep for your final, which will most likely be a duel between the two, displaying different techniques, spells and etc. Of what you have learned. Both pass but the winner passes with flying colors."

The Dean did a quick sweep of the room with his eyes.

"Any questions? If not, do you have anything for these students?"

Katherine thought for a while before smiling.

" I just wanna wish you all good luck on  this final! And whoever I choose, may the best magic wielded win!"

The Dean nodded in approval as Katherine finished.

"Very well. You are all dismissed, best of luck!"

We slowly began to disperse and file out of the room and regrouped as we headed to the dining hall. Kristen chatted with Brendan as I talked with Nathan. We grabbed food and took seats at a random empty table. Kristen was thinking of something before she spoke.

"Hm, so let me get this straight, one of the six will be tested by her by means of the final?"

Nathan shrugged.

"That's how I heard it..."

We discussed casually about the terms of this so-called finals when Katherine entered the dining hall. I noticed her scanning the room for someone. As her gaze landed in our direction, her eyes lit and she began to make her way towards us. She stood at the edge of our table as she grinned.

"Hello there! Brendan, long time no see don't you think?"

Kristen and I looked at each other with a confused expression, not following what was going on. Nathan seemed to roll his eyes. ' Do they know her?'

" I dunno."

Brendan simply shrugged, not seeming to care about what she was talking about. He looked at us and realized.

"oh, Uh sorry guys. This is Katherine. We used to date for a little. So, I guess you can call her my ex!"

Brendan seemed to perk up at the last part. It made me chuckle a bit on the inside. To me she seemed like one of those stereotypical rich girls. I watched as she slid next to Brendan, as he responded by sliding away.

" Yes, don't you miss those times? We practically ruled the school~! I hope you didn't miss me too much~!"

Brendan looked at her like she was crazy before he replied.

" No, not really. Frankly I thinking breaking up with you was an epiphany for me... And clarifying, YOU ruled the school. Not me..."

Yup, she is one of those rich girl types. Probably those what-I-want-I'll-get types too... Katherine huffed in frustration.

" You just wait, Brendan Pharen, you'll be begging to take me back. That's why, I've decided to choose you for my final. Get ready~!"

Ding ding ding. How did I know? I didnt. With that she walked away. Kristen, with an eyebrow raised asked.

" You seriously went out with that? You were sleep deprived right?"

Brendan covered his face in his hands and groaned. Nathan simply chuckled.

" I know I know, that's why I broke up with her... She was too clingy; and definitely wanted lots of popularity. Not my type.... Hah, maybe Kristen... Maybe I was."

We all laughed it off as we eased back into casual conversation, jumping topic-to-topic and eating our food. We had the rest of the day off and decided to spend it together as a group. Little did we know, things were just getting warmed up.
