Chapter 3

It took awhile, but with two people giving few well-placed threats to keep him docile, Rozenbach was once again deemed to have an appearance befitting a Concubine Candidate.

"You look very beautiful!" Grace praised Rozenbach, happy with the result of her work. Tea Cake nodded in agreement, her smile so wide that all her teeth could be seen.

Rozenbach felt sore all over as if he had been roughly manhandled, for he was continuously being yelled at to stand still, to not move, and to never stop smiling!

Perhaps this could be considered a future preview of when he gets ordered around by his mother-in-law? Rozenbach shivered in fear and tossed that horrifying mental image away.

What nonsense! I am a man!

They had even made him stuff those two oranges onto his chest area! The extra weight and pressure caused his shoulders to felt uncomfortable.

But why did the oranges have smiley faces drawn on it?

Noticing Tea Cake's beaming smile while he was staring at the childish drawing, Rozenbach knew it was this little maid's handiwork. As Tea Cake looked at her Young Master, she could not help but let out a small sob. "Young master has grown up and will be marrying soon. This servant is so very happy!"

... Watch me, Tea Cake! I, Rozenbach, will deliberately fail this selection to prove you wrong!

As if knowing what he was thinking, Grace wryly smiled; placing her hands on Rozenbach's shoulders and whispered next to his ears, "Don't forget, the lives of your entire family are in your hands."

What are you trying to say?!

Rozenbach decided to pretend to be dumb. Unfortunately, Grace decided to elaborate further.

"If you fail the selection, I might just accidentally reveal your true gender to my friend, Timebun, while we're having some tea. She might then accidentally tell her husband about you..."

You are just blatantly threatening me now!

Rozenbach looked at Grace in sheer horror, half-expecting horns, and a tail to appear from the royal doctor's tiny, slender body. Rozenbach sighed. "I still do not know what is this selection is about ..."

"Miss, it is very difficult to be selected as a concubine candidate for King Sigil!" Tea Cake gushed with enthusiasm and offered him the information he needed.

Isn't it more difficult for a man to be another man's concubine?

"... You do realize two men cannot be with each other, right?" Rozenbach felt that it was an appropriate time as any to point it out. But the two females ignored him. Grace continued, "This is the first time King Sigil is choosing a concubine! From the day he'd gotten married, he'd been very faithful to his wife! No matter how sexy or beautiful those women that threw themselves at him, he never got tempted!"

What a man. To be unaffected by beautiful and sexy women seducing him. Is he for real?

It's not that Rozenbach was an advocate of polygamy, but rather that Sigil was a King, and kings throughout history were known to have many concubines and no one had any right to comment about it.

Perhaps this King was a henpecked husband?

"The Queen was the one that organized this concubine selection."
