"You ready? Christian just got here." Ashton asks, peeking around the doorframe of the bedroom.
"Yeah, just let me grab my phone." I smooth down the front of my tank top, slipping on my vans and snatching my phone off the bed.
Seeing that Ashton was waiting in the hallway, I take the opportunity to go on the balcony and take a picture of the beach sunset.
Opening Instagram and putting a filter on it, I caption the picture "Big weekends in small towns" , adding the heart eye and palm tree emoji.
From being spotted with the boys last week I've gained a few thousand followers, and my notifications are quickly filled with comments and likes.
Turning to find Ashton clearing his throat, I step inside and close the door, awkwardly adding in a "let's go" as I follow him down the stairs.
The first thing I see when I reach the bottom is Christian and Paisley, but as I enter the kitchen I see the rest of the gang. I smile and wave, but something in my gut makes me feel like I shouldn't trust them so easily. Obviously they're trustworthy, Ashton's known them for ages, but something about this particular group just gives me bad vibes.
As expected, we all file out to Christian's jeep and pile into the small car. Since there's not enough room I find myself on Ashton's lap, not that I'm complaining. The car pulls out of the driveway and we head down the road to the restaurant.
Leaning back on Ashton's chest to try and keep my hair from blowing in his face, I smile up at him.
"Hi."
"Hi." He grins.
"'best friends.'" Emmie mimics, adding air quotes. "That's what they all say."
Ashton gives her an innocent look as I shrug, watching as we pull into a parking space.
We're seated at a table on the outer deck, and struggling to find a seat, I end up between Paisley and Brian.
"What do you normally get?" I ask, trying to create conversation Paisley.
"I'm not really a fish kind of girl, so I stick to the fried shrimp." She smiles, pointing to a place on the menu.
"Really? Me too, I'll get that." I nod.
She grins at me and turns to her left, starting to talk with Christian.
Well, that was the shortest conversation I think I've ever engaged in.
"You call me up, it's like-"
"Excuse me." I stand up, taking my phone and walking towards the fence.
Recognizing the ring tone as the same one Calum set for himself in London, I brace myself for whatever he may have to say to me.
"Hey, what's up?" I chirp.
"I'm bored."
"Sounds like a personal problem." I shrug, even though he can't see me.
"How rude, I demand an apology Ms. Jaylin."
"Request denied." I laugh, "Now seriously, why are you calling me?"
He scoffs. "What? I can't just call my bestest friend who's a girl and chat it up like its 3012, tonight?"
"No," I roll my eyes. "You can, but it's just so out of character."
"Fine, you caught me. I actually am quite bored, I'll have you know. And I wanted to know if you wanted to come over for a movie night?"
"Ashton didn't tell you?" I say, surprise in my tone as I shift from one foot to another.
"Tell me what?" I can hear shuffling on his end of the line.
"We went out to his uncle's for the weekend." I say in a 'duh' tone.
"Oh, no, he left it out. I was wondering why he wasn't answering his phone.. That bastard."
"You called him before me?" I say, dramatically acting offended.
"Duh."
"Calum Ho-"
"Is everything alright?"
I turn around and find Brian, his bottom lip awkwardly placed between his teeth.
"Yes, it's fine. I um, I gotta go Calum. I'll call you back later and we can discuss the friendship you just seriously messed up later."
"Okay. Oh, and have fun with your 'not-so-boyfriend' boyfriend."
"Whatever, later Cal."
Hanging up, I follow the tall boy back to the table. Pulling my chair out for me, he nods for me to sit before pushing it back in.
"Thanks." I quietly answer.
"Sorry about that," I speak up. "what are we talking about?" I ask Paisley.
"Just bringing up some old memories, telling stories, the kind of things old people do."
I laugh a little, "what's the most recent story?"
"Ryan was just telling about the time Ashton was here and took her camping out in his uncles backyard. Apparently, there was a snake or something and Ashton flipped out."
"Ryan... And Ashton?" I raise a brow.
"Yeah, they used to date.. Didn't he tell you?"
My head seems to spin as I look over at Ashton, who's sitting across from Christian and telling him about life on the road.
"Nope, he never mentioned it."
