Eva

One month later

"Baby!" Lucia cried as she wobbled on the carpet, pointing a chubby finger at my now prominent seven month stomach. I was lounging almost comfortably on the carpet with my back against Chris' legs, our daughter using my legs to balance on her chunky legs.

"Baby in mama's tummy." I smiled, our daughter continuing her squeals of excitement while Chris played with my hair, the baby now causing it to grow at twice it's speed, a new shine making it glisten in the Miami sun.

"Are you excited to see the baby in mama's tummy today?" I asked with a smile, lifting her into my arms as I struggled to stand, using my husband as a fulcrum to rise to my feet.

"You really shouldn't be doing that." He warned, but I raised my eyebrow at him and shuffled towards the kitchen where the diaper bag was left from our outing. "I'm fine, and I'm still mobile." I groaned, shoving more diapers into the side while he dug through the pantry for another package of wipes.

"Abigail! Grab a sweater, we're heading out!" I called, listening to her shuffle down the hall with a quiet sigh. "Where?" She asked, tapping her fingers anxiously as she always did when Chris was in the room.

"We have an appointment with my OBGYN and then lunch, then we're dropping Chris off at work." I smiled, making her relax at the mention of him leaving for forty eight hours straight.

"Okay." She exhaled, leading the way out to the car, making Chris glance at me with worry. I had been trying to get the story out of her, calling the agency for her information, but she was an airtight case, one that we had little access to.

"I'll try tonight." I whispered, making him nervously run his fingers through his hair. My poor husband knew he could get through to this poor girl, but she flips a lid every time he goes remotely near her. We had offered therapists, and mentors, but she struck it down and closed herself off, reverting us back to plan A.

"I have a few ideas." I whispered, leading him out to the car with a soft smile, allowing him to peck me on the cheek as I slid into the passenger seat, handing Lucia over to buckle in.

...

I laid back on the table and lifted my shirt, revealing the stomach that had grown almost overnight. My eyes widened at how my figure had changed, making my body seem foreign.

"Alright Dr. Zambrano, sorry for the wait, I just couldn't get over that little baby of yours, outside with the...babysitter?" My obstetrician asked as she set the clipboard down, taking a seat beside me near the machine.

"Oh, no. That's our foster daughter." I explained carefully with a cautious smile, getting a shocked grin out of her. "I had no idea you were doing that. Good for you." She smiled, both Chris and I accepting her awkward praise.

"Now, I'm guessing this is your second pregnancy based on your adorable little one outside, although I can't place which of you she resembles more." She smiled, squirting the gel onto my stomach mindlessly, both Chris and I sputtering an uncomfortable chuckle.

"Actually, no. This is my first pregnancy. I'm very lucky to have carried to such a far term on our first round. But we adopted Lucia when she was about three months old." I informed, making my doctor nearly drop her wand in embarrassment, her cheeks now burning red as she struggled for words.

"Oh my god, I am so sorry to have assumed-."

But I shook my head at her to try and ease some of the embarrassment that she was feeling ok the moment.
