Trey woke the next morning, and sat up, hoping that what he had seen was just a nightmare.
But it wasn't. Jakes bed was empty.
Treys heart plummeted, and tears welled up in his eyes. Slowly, he rolled onto Jakes bed, and buried his head in the pillow.
There was a crinkling noise.
Trey lifted his head and looked around the room. No one else was there.
He let his head drop onto the pillow again, and heard the crinkle again.
Trey reached his hand inside the pillowcase and brought out a folded note. He unfolded it, and read;
29-9-0
Trey frowned. What was this? a code? Why couldn't Jake just tell him why Chase ki....... why Chase hated him?
Trey sighed and refolded the note, hiding it under his mattress.
Sadly, Trey got dressed, and plodded into the kitchen.
Everyone was already seated, and eating breakfast as Trey walked in. Chase glared at him and said "You slept in. You're wasting time"
"Sorry" mumbled Trey, as he dropped into the seat beside Mia and drank some water.
Chase gave him one final stare, and stood up, addressing the gang.
"Last night, Jake came to me. He said that he didn't want to steal anymore, and was leaving the gang to find a respectable job.
LIAR!!! Trey's mind screamed, and Trey had to bite his lip to stop himself yelling the truth. Instead, he took a big bite of his toast, and listened quietly as Chase announced the stealing places for that day.
Mia and Trey. Again. "I saw you burgling from that house yesterday" announced Chase, "and I want you to do that again today. We''ll get more money through burgling. Maybe you should teach the rest of them- " Chase signalled to the rest of the group "-how to do it"
Trey nodded halfheartedly and stared at his plate. He was scared that if he looked at Chase he wouldnt be able to stop himself. From hurting him. Like he hurt Jake. He slowly stood up, and, without waiting to see if Mia was coming, plodded out the door, into the crisp morning air.
Mia and Trey looked at each other, wondering where to start. Trey couldn't think properly. there was one, burning question on his mind- what was that code for. And why did Chase kill Jake. Everytime he thought about it, a wave of anger washed over him, and at that moment, Chase knew that he couldn't ignore this any longer.
"How about we split up" said Trey. "I'll take this house, and you take that one"
"Ok....." said Mia, giving him a quizzical look, and then walked off to the house she was going to burgle.
Trey waited until she was inside the house, and couldn't see him anymore, then turned and ran, down the streets and back towards the place he had come from. The gangs home.
Quietly, he pulled out a paper clip from his pocket, and jiggled it inside the lock. The lock clicked, and the door opened, letting Trey into the gangs house.
Slowly and silently, he made his way towards Chases room. Chases room was the biggest, and the only one that had a lock on it.
Quickly, Trey put his paper clip into the lock, and again moved it around, trying to pick the lock.
After a minute of trying, the lock opened, and Trey pushed the door open, letting himself into Chases room.
It was massive, bigger than all of the rooms put together. It had a luxurious king bed in the middle, with portraits on the wall and a proper, on suite bathroom to the left.
Trey narrowed his eyes. Whilst the thieves had to slave away every day and sleep on hard, cold mattresses, Chase got to sleep on a warm, large and soft bed. How unfair.
Seething, Trey went over to the desk and began sorting through the drawers. He opened the bottom drawer, and pulled out a large safe with a lock on it. But not one of the locks that you can pick. A combination lock.
Suddenly, everything fell into place. Trey gasped, and ran into his room. He put his hand under his mattress, and pulled it out again, clutching Jakes last note to him.
Dashing back into Chases room, he uncrumpled Jakes note and entered the numbers into the safe
29-9-0
The door of the safe swung open. Jake looked inside and gasped in shock
