Michael was reheating some meat, standing over the stove with a focused look. He probably never had to cook in his life before this. I wondered if they ate food like we did from where ever they came from. I was tempted to ask.

Blue was waiting at his feet for handouts. I reached into the fridge and pulled out a piece of raw meat, feeding it to him. If he was a wolf, he'd probably enjoy that a bit more than cooked food.

Michael glanced over, giving me a funny look. "What?" I asked.

"Nothing," he said, resuming his focus. I didn't push the subject and grabbed a granola bar. It was early, and I had no idea what to do with myself. I'd already hunted, there was nothing to clean, and I didn't feel like going out onto the water after the body I'd found.

I ate the granola bar by the window, watching the water ripple across the lake. Blue came and settled next to me on the couch, curling up against my legs. I finished the bar and laid down, drifting off again. If there was nothing to do, I might as well nap.

A large bang brought me out of sleep. Michael was trying to grab a pot from a shelf and ended up dropping everything behind it, pans and pots scattered across the ground.

"Sorry," he sheepishly smiled. I laughed a little to myself.

"You're ok. What time is it?" I asked.

"Just past noon. I'm making lunch if you want some," he offered. I nodded, standing up and helping him prepare the food.

"What were you thinking?" I asked.

"Venison stew? I'm a little tired of just eating meat and I figured we could spare some broth and canned vegetables," he said. I nodded, agreeing.

"I can help," I offered. I grabbed cans while he started cutting up pieces of meat, throwing them in the pot. I poured the vegetables and broth in, turning the stove on. I didn't really know how to cook, but it didn't seem too hard. The worse thing that could happen is it turned out too cold, and I could just heat it up more if that was the case.

"How did you find this place," Michael asked.

"I found the SUV around back and drove until I got close to the Canadian border. I'm going to head into the country after winter. I heard about a safe haven there," I answered.

"There was," Michael replied.

"How do you know it's not still there?" I asked. There goes my whole plan if it was gone.

"The angels destroyed it about a month back. I'm sure that there's another one somewhere else, but I haven't been in the loop about things so I'm not sure. You humans are resilient, its unlikely they just gave up after the first attack," Michael responded.

Humans. He wasn't human and I was talking to him about my plans. I stopped talking and poured myself a bowl of the now warm stew, sitting down and eating it silently. Maybe staying here with him was a bad idea.
