I left in the morning while Michael was out walking. I don't know what compelled me to, but I had a feeling it was for the best. He would kill me if I stayed and if he didn't, then one of the others would have found us. I didn't want to be there for that.
Blue seemed to know I was on edge, not making a sound as we crept around the back of the house to the Tahoe. I carefully opened the drivers side, allowing Blue to hop in first before I followed. I waited a moment before starting the engine, trying to figure out where to go. I had taken most of the venison from the freezer, placing it in an iced cooler. I had blankets, pillows, the gallons of gas I had found, and any other necessity that I couldn't leave behind. I had even thought to pack the shampoo, something I failed to find before coming here.
The car started with a roar, no doubt alerting Michael of our departure. I peeled out of the shed and floored it, not wanting to give him the opportunity to catch up. No doubt he could, but he seemed far enough to at least give me a head start.
I drove like a bat out of hell for 4 hours, trying to put as much distance between the cabin and I. I had to be in Canada by now. I prayed that I was going the right way before remembering. If God wasn't listening then angels were. I let Blue out to stretch his legs while I filled up the tank with more gas. There would be cars to siphon from once I made it to a road, but for now sticking to the cover that the trees offered was my best option.
A lone howl out in the forest, Blue, set me on edge. He came sprinting back, leaping into the car. I immediately capped the lid and started up the car again, driving until the tank was empty and the car sputtered to a halt. I let out a sigh I didn't know I'd been holding.
I'd made the right decision even though it didn't feel like it. He was an angel and I didn't know what he was thinking or what his plans were. He was civil because he had no need to worry about me slitting his throat. I couldn't even kill him. We had both known that.
It was nearly dark and traveling with the headlights on didn't seem to appealing. With no power, anyone could spot the lone headlights from miles away. Instead, I busied myself with refueling the car and siphoning more gas from other cars. I'd veered onto the main road not too long before, needing the better mileage than the rough forest floor was giving the car. This way I could travel farther.
I was nearly out of gas and after siphoning as much as I could from the other cars, I only had a tank and a half before I'd have to ditch the car. Hopefully there would be another with better mileage or more gas. As nice as the 4WD was, the Tahoe was a gas guzzler. If I wanted to be as resourceful as possible, I'd have switched over to one of the sedans I'd siphoned from. The Tahoe though had the space, and if anything, that was worth keeping it for one more night.
Locking the doors and grabbing a blanket with my pillows, I laid down. Blue curled up on the car floor, his face resting right in front of mine. We'd be traveling for at least another few days if what Michael had said about the rebel camp was true, and if that was the case then I'd need my rest.
