The stars were dark tonight. It was strange how something so inviting, so welcoming that had guided humanity in their travels for thousands of years could morph into something terrifying altogether. Their light was dim, masked in the shadows of the passing clouds and offered no additional light to help you as you wound your way through the alleyways of the city.
Any darkened corner, any alleyway was a potential threat, a haven for the serial killer that you were so hellbent on tracking down. You pictured the single glowing blue eye laced with red staring at you through the darkness of night, glittering with just the beginnings of insanity. You weren't sure if you wanted to confront the killer in all actuality. What might were you against another who had the power to withstand an explosion that had uprooted an entire building?
You turned into an alleyway and came across a ladder, leading to the rooftop of a nearby apartment complex. You had never been a big fan of heights as you wrapped your shaking fingers against the first rung, hoisting yourself above the ground.
And away you climbed, ascending your way into the heavens like a bird without its wings until you found yourself at the top of the roof. Don't look down, you told yourself but did it anyways, only adding to the growing pit of unease that was selling inside your stomach.
Cars passed below without a care in the world, people inside oblivious to all around them. In the distance you could still make out the speck of red and blue police sirens in the distance and the smouldering ruins of the convenience store.
This is all a game of cat and mouse, you thought as you skirted the edge of the rooftop. The killer, whoever he was, purposefully drew out police officers and struck them down with a supernatural ease, you were sure of it. You weren't sure why you had decided to pursue the demented individual, guided only by your instincts.
You thought yourself to be lost when you once more caught sight of the hooded figure leaping onto another rooftop, jumping from building to building with a grace that was not benign to anything human. Whatever this creature was, you were beginning to realise that it wasn't human. At least, nothing human could slaughter an entire building full of people, right?
Then again, what was the real distinction between a human and a monster? Humans had the blood of millions that boosted their civilisations, countless wars and slaughters that had led to the glorious new age of the twenty-first century. While many did not like to admit it, humans were monsters themselves, each and every one capable of slaughter should they be tempted or pushed in just the right way. It would take only one of them with enough power and enough madness to bring the whole of civilization to its knees.
You stood at the edge of the rooftop, looking to where the roof of another building seemed to beckon you, taunting you to jump across the open air. There was no time to revel in the fear, the insanity that was gripping you at this very moment. If you hesitated any more longer than you already had, you were certain to lose the suspect altogether.
But why were you doing this, that question still never had been truly answered. Why were you, out of all people, deciding to chase down this demented figure in the dark of night, where the stars seemed to laugh and hide their rays, shrouding the world in darkness? What might were you against such a being who had the potential to cause chaos and sow sorrow wherever he went?
Did you do it for justice, out of a manifested desire to avenge those who had fallen this very night? You hoped that was your motive, the only reason that was guiding your feet as you leaped from building to building, surprised by what adrenaline could do to the human body when it hammered in your heart and pumped in your veins.
