The practice of spying or using spies to obtain information about the plans and activities of a foreign government or competing company. Designed to block an enemy's source of information, to device the enemy, to prevent sabotage, and to gather political and military information for the national defense with an intent, or reason to believe, that the information may be used to the injury of the United States or to the advantage of any foreign nation.
