PROLOGUE!

IT WAS A FAIRLY COOL evening. Dawn Morgan and her little sister Kathrine skipped ahead, making sure to splash in the puddles. On days like this, their mother made sure for them to wear the sweaters Nana had knitted them. Comfortable but itchy. Nothing to wear in Gotham's warm weather.
The Morgan family had been out for a family movie, something perfect for the girls. Great for family bonding time. There was nothing fun about forced fun though, Dawn didn't like the movie and would have rather been playing in the park. There was something about being forced to sit in uncomfortable chairs and watch a screen for hours, and then have someone tall sit right in your view. She disliked it. The park was a better choice.
On this night, the air seemed different, a still had come to rest around them; Dawn had taken notice. The quietness made her bring Kathrine closer to her; it was almost haunting how no car horns sounded or people talking. Gotham was always busy. Mr. and Mrs. Morgan didn't take notice, no, they linked arms and merrily chatted about the movie.
A sudden commotion interrupted the wonderful time. A trash can was kicked and came to a rolling stop. Dawn took hold of her sisters hand and brought her back. "Mother-" Two dark figures began walking towards them, their outlines large and beefy looking. Bad news.
"Children, come, now." The sisters took no time to scurry to their mother's arms. "Mr. Morgan." The first said, he appeared to have a large scar going from his eye to his chin, a deadly weapon in his grasp. "We want our money." Little did Mrs. Morgan know was that she was married to a gang-buster, hot shot, one of the biggest traders around. Mr. Morgan recently came into a large investment of money, thinking he won the game he took it without permission. But the game wasn't won, it never is.
"We can talk about this, gentlemen."
"Pretty family you got there. Hate to see something happen to them." Dawn saw that the second had a large patch over his eye, his teeth grinding and making a terrible noise; she shrunk back to her mother. "All we want is the money." A gun was brought in the midsts and cocked to fire. "I don't know what you are talking about." It was never a good idea to play dumb, but Mr. Morgan did anyways.
As usual, it did not end well. Dawn heard gunshots and saw her parents topple to the ground. Kathrine wailed when she saw her mother on the ground, the red now seeping through her white blouse. Her first instinct was to hide, the brunette grabbed her sister and hid behind the dumpster. "Get out here brats!" Kathrine shivered and let out tiny sobs as Dawn proceeded to quiet her. She tried to remember back to when her father taught her self-defense, "Look for their weakness" Dawn quickly grabbed a nearby trashcan lid and peeked out. The mobsters pointed at her and aimed the gun. Without thinking, the lid was thrown and smacked the first one in the leg; but Dawn muffled a scream when something silver flew and sunk into her wrist.
"Kathrine!" She took hold firmly on her sister's hand and ran with full speed to the open street. "Come on!" The nightly crowd of Gotham was in for a surprise when two young girls ran from the alley, faces permanent with horror and fear. The police proclaimed it as a homicide and left the case to rot in files forever. The sisters were sent to a children's home; they were orphans now, no one to go to.
The girl's stories were told to the couples that came to the home. They were considered 'legends' to the mother of the house, but 'freaks' to the other children. Dawn didn't know what her future would hold. She didn't know how she survived with just a bullet in her wrist. It was something special. And she surely didn't know what was to come after that night.
