CHAPTER 1

As "Barbie girl" sounded for probably the hundredth time, she rolled over and smacked her phone until the music shut off. Dawn rubbed at the sleep in her eyes and swung her legs over the side of her bed, feet meeting the freezing hardwood. She quickly moved to the bathroom, turned on the light and looked at her reflection in the mirror. The bags were dark under her eyes telling that she hadn't slept. She sighed and grabbed a toothbrush from the counter.
With her teeth brushed and face washed, Dawn changed into jeans and a graphic shirt and lightly powdered her face with some makeup. She patted the top of her sister's head when she walked by, seeing she was already at the table and digging into Fruit Loops; Kathrine swatted in protest. Dawn smirked in response and pressed the START button on the coffee machine, caffeine being her best friend for the mornings. As the magic warmed up, she grabbed a protein smoothie and a yogurt before sitting down at the small table.
"You eat so healthy." Kathrine shoved some of the colored loops in her mouth. "It's good to keep shape," Dawn took a swig of the smoothie and cringed, kale and other greens was never good to start the day with. "Kitty, don't you have a math test?" Her sister nodded, ponytail bobbing back and forth. "I studied last night. I know all the answers." Kitty, or Kathrine, was basically the smartest kid in her class, she could easily skip a grade or two if she wanted- but Dawn wasn't very fond of that idea.
Dawn often felt bad for her sister, the only times she saw her was in the mornings and when school was over. She couldn't help Kathrine, she had her own homework and a job to do. At least they were finally out of that home. The place where they were made fun of and put to work. It was okay to live on her own, but Dawn had a lonely feeling in her heart. She spent weeks isolated from the world, trying to patch the remaining holes; nothing worked.
The coffee machine dinged, Dawn broke from her concentration and stood. The dark liquid flowed into a to-go cup, sugar, and creamer was added. "Hurry Kitty," Dawn glanced up a the clock and screwed on a lid. Kathrine muffled an "Mkay" and spooned her breakfast in her mouth. "Five minutes." Dawn said and walked to her bedroom. She reached in the back of her closet and pulled out her uniform, folding it and placing it in a black gym bag. With the bag on her shoulder, she slipped out of the room and wiggled on the red sneakers she wore. "Kitty-"
"Coming!" Footsteps sounded as Kathrine ran from her room with a pink bookbag and matching lunch box. "Okay, I'm ready. I even have Mr. Squiggles with me, just in case." She whispered the last part shyly and exposed the stuffed turtle that was hidden amongst papers in her bag. Dawn smiled and locked the door behind her and walked to the red Nissan that sat in the parking garage of the apartment buildings.
"Today's a new day." Kathrine said once she buckled in her seat. Dawn adjusted the mirror and looked at her. "New things to learn."

You could tell by the shuffling feet, lockers slamming shut and sneakers squeaking that the school itself was busy. The noises filled Dawn's ears when she walked through the doors and to the row of lockers. Thankfully her's was the last one, no one would be snooping around and trying to see what she was up to. With a squeak, the door opened and the gym bag was set inside, her hand lingered on the bag that held the uniform. The uniform that gave her the name Dove, Gotham's protector as they call her.
"Good morning!" Mia Maze announced, heels clicking on the newly waxed floors of the hallway. When Dawn met the girl, she wondered how someone could be so cheerful in the mornings, and how the heck they were going to be friends. "How's my little ray of sunshine?" Dawn silently cringed at the name, Mia had been calling her 'ray of sunshine' since sophomore year, and now they were in college and she still did. "I'm fine."
"That's wonderful." Blonde locks were flickered over her shoulder in a graceful way. "I have big news. Like, major, macho grande news for you." Dawn shifted her hold on the binder and closed her locker door with a sigh. "New kid," Mia hooked an arm around her, "starting today, heard he's really cute but bad-boy type. Perfect for you." Mia had also been trying to get Dawn with someone, she thought it wasn't right to not have dated anyone in their life.
Dawn never felt and interest for boys, they were a waste of time to her. "So..what do you think?" The brunette sighed and unhooked her friend's arm from around her. "I think we both need to get to class and worry about boys later." Mia turned into a deflated balloon, "Fine. But you at least need to see him."
The duo began their walk to the first class, English; Mia gabbing on about how she needed a 'new boyfriend' and 'someone that respected her' Dawn simply nodding along and opening the door. Mia's gabbing stopped, she stared straight ahead at the back of the class. Dawn followed her gaze and saw the new kid himself, his appearance practically screamed 'bad-boy' spiked up hair, devilish smirk and jean jacket. "Oh my- god." The blonde melted and clung to the brunette; she struggled to make her way to her seat and drop off Mia.
"Class, I'd like you all to welcome Jayson Todd. Our new student."
