"You're late."
Sam was waiting at the door when I got out of the cab. He was still wearing his work clothes but without the coat and his tie was already loosened. His left hand was leaning against the doorframe while the other was resting on his waist. He looked intimidating as he watched me walk towards him. In my peripheral vision, I could see some of our neighbors watching us - watching Sam, more like. I kept my head down as I stopped in front of him.
"I'm sorry. The interview took longer than expected."
"Why didn't you leave a message then?"
His question pierced me. That was my mistake. I forgot to leave him a message. Originally, I didn't have to because I was about to leave but then Gina came and I got preoccupied with her jolliness to the point that I forgot about my phone.
"You could've called. I was worried about where you were and what you're doing." His words were sharp until the end and his eyes were glaring at me.
I felt like a child being scolded. And in front of some of our neighbors, to make things worse. My lips were starting to pout but I kept my head down.
"I'm sorry. It's my fault," I mumbled, "The woman I met earlier was sweet and I lost track of time hanging out with her."
His cold stare didn't lessen even after my explanation. I played with fingers and my foot started drawing circles on our porch. I got him mad again.
"Get inside."
I didn't hesitate to go inside the house. I was scared to go against his order. I went straight to the sofa and sat silently there. I watched how Sam walked back and forth in front of me while both hands on his waist. He kept glancing at me, his mouth opening and closing like he wanted to say something but decided against it. I sat on the sofa like a guilty puppy. I disappointed him again.
I jolted when I saw him kneel in front of me. His eyes now held something other than anger. His held both my hands and kissed it.
"Can you promise to text me next time? It sucks not knowing where you are without me."
In almost five years of my relationship with Sam, not once did he get mad at me. He was always the understanding one between us. Even though I was clearly the one who made a mistake, he would bow his head while whispering I'm sorry. Sometimes, I think I'm not worthy of the love he's giving me. It was too much.
I shook my head, "I'm sorry, Sam. It's my fault. I'm sorry."
"Is your job done now?" He asked as I felt him stroke my hair.
I nodded, "Yup. I'll just submit the papers to Ms. Coleman and I'm done."
"Good. We still have a wedding to fix." He chuckled and I couldn't help but laugh as well.
Thank goodness our fight didn't last. It was only minor scolding and a few cases of guilt but we're okay now. We spent the rest of the day cuddling in the couch while watching any cheesy movies we could find.
"Maybe we should start working on the invitations. Do you have a list?"
My back was leaning against his chest while his arms were wrapped around me and held a bowl of popcorn in front of me. I wasn't really paying attention to the movie. I was busy tracing the few protruding veins in his arms.
"I haven't made a list yet but I already know the people we're going to invite. My parents, your parents, Sarah and Kevin," I laughed when he groaned at the mention of his nephew's name, "Daphne and her family, Marcia, Bea, and your friends."
