That night, Piper had a hard time sleeping. She didn't know if it was because of her new friends or that she was in the place that ruined her.
The nurses were completely okay with Piper staying an extra night. In fact, a lot of them were happy. Despite how negative she was, most of the nurses learned to like the feisty girl. However, Piper never learned to like the nurses.
They would act like she was some kind of diseased creature. They hardly ever spoke to her at all during the first year. Even in the second and third year of treatment, they weren't super nice. Even though they were still a bit bitchy, they were all sad about Piper leaving, she had become a part of the hospital. But Piper didn't want to be a part of the hospital, she had to get out.
So she ate.
She didn't eat because she was getting better, she ate to act like she was getting better. However, it taught her to eat like a healthy person. Treatment wasn't a complete bust, but the only thing the doctors had to do with Piper's being healthy was torturing her.
When she finally fell asleep, it wasn't for long. She was woken extremely early by a light knocking on her door. Piper groaned and flopped out of bed.
The girl pried open the door, squealing when she saw who it was before slamming it in his face.
Piper scolded herself, taking this opportunity to run her fingers through her hair a bit. She took a deep breath and opened the door again, "Sorry, I wasn't expecting you to come this early, come in."
Luke chuckled and quietly shut the door behind him. Piper sat on the edge of the tiny bed and he sat next to her, careful not to sit too close.
"That's okay. I just wanted to get a head start on the day." Luke looked down at his fingers and fidgeted a bit, making Piper curious.
"I'm pretty sure Addie is still sleeping but we can check to see--"
"I came to see you, actually." Luke blurted out.
Piper raised her eyebrows in surprise and tucked a piece of hair behind her ear, trying to act like she wasn't excited. Nobody had ever went out of their way to see Piper before, so this was new to her. She was jittery and happy and scared. Why had he wasted his time coming to see her?
"How come?" She asked, looking up at Luke shyly.
"I just need someone to talk to who won't judge me." He sighed, rubbing his eyes.
"Okay, whatcha got?" Piper scooted backwards until her spine hit the wall, pale legs extended in front of her.
Luke did the same except his legs were way too long to fit on the bed. He would've laughed if it wasn't for the mood he's been in lately.
"I just feel like I don't really have anybody anymore." Luke licked his lips slowly (which made Piper melt) before continuing, "I mean I have Addie but she's locked away here. I have friends but I wouldn't trust them with deep shit like this. I have my mum but she blames me for Addison's eating disorder. I just feel like everyone is against me nowadays."
Piper sighed and closed her eyes. How was she supposed to respond to that? She didn't have to though because Luke spoke first.
"You can't deny it, Piper. You barely know me and I barley know you, yet here I am at five in the morning, pouring out my feelings to you. No offense but if I'm telling you these things it really means I have no one." Luke pouted.
Piper tried to act like the words didn't hurt her but she'd never been a good actress. Scooting away from Luke, who had gotten too close for comfort, she nodded and picked at her fingernails.
"Shit, Piper I didn't mean it like that." Luke scrambled and scooted so close to her that their legs were touching. He grabbed her hand.
"I know." Piper nodded, still not looking at Luke.
"No, I'm sorry, that sounded so bad. I just meant that I've only known you for a day and I trust you more than my family and friends." Luke rubbed circles over the top of Piper's small hand.
This made Piper angry for some reason. She ripped her hand from his and stood up from the bed, "That doesn't mean you have no one, Luke. You don't even know what having no one is! You have a family and you have friends! Be fucking grateful that you have someone that loves you!"
Luke looked surprised but he stood up and snapped back anyway, "You have your mum and I bet you have friends!"
"You know damn well I do not have my mum!" Piper crossed her arms over her chest, "And as far as friends go, I've barely seen daylight in the past three years! How do you expect me to make friends! All the friends that I did have forgot about me like everyone else did! I missed out on some of the best years of a child's life and you have the nerve to stand here and tell me you've got nothing?" The girl yelled and she could feel tears welling up in her eyes, who the hell did he think he was?
"I'm sorry that your life sucks but you aren't the only one going through a rough time!" Luke threw his hands up in the air.
"I think you should go." Piper choked. Luke had no idea what she had been through and he was attacking Piper like he knew every single flaw about her.
Luke looked angry but after Piper spoke those words, reality hit him and he realized what he'd just done.
"Piper, I'm--"
"Here's the key to Addison's room, you don't ever have to talk to me again. I'll go home and you can sneak in here everyday without me bothering you." Piper rummaged through a drawer before tossing the keys in Luke's direction, not caring if he caught them or not.
"Piper, please--"
"Bye, Luke." Piper shook her head, tears fresh on her cheeks.
Before he could protest any further, Piper had pushed him out of the room. She slammed the door and slid down the back of it, crying for the first time in what felt like forever.
She didn't know who Luke was but she hated him. She hated him for trusting her and she hated him for being completely rude to her.
But most of all, she hated him for making her feel something.
