It's no secret that WE THE YOUNG has struggled (see Rant #6), and by admitting as much it's also no secret that I had higher expectations for it.
On that vein, I'll also admit that the person who failed me is myself. I didn't write as tight a story as I could have. I winged it too much. I didn't spend enough time with it (after all, I wrote all 85k words in a whopping two months). This yielded a Not So Great Story. The feedback I got the most is that it's too damn slow. The feedback I gave myself is that I spent way too much time in Vera's head during the first half of the story, where too little things actually happened. As a result the characters didn't interact as much among them and Vera didn't interact as much with her environment as readers expected.
Its "commercial" failure is no wonder, then. I let readers down and by doing so I let myself down.
Since I'm a pretty honest little shit, I'll also admit something else. I somehow knew exactly how many reads HALL OF FAME was going to achieve by the time I finished posting it, and I nailed it on the head. I did the same mental math for WE THE YOUNG, even while factoring in the reception it was getting and...
I came up waaaaay short. Cue the broken heart.
Here's the part where I start to apologize because, even though this is my rant, I'm making it too much about myself instead of my readers, as I should. I'M SORRY, but bear with me.
All of this was to stress a major point: I feel pretty shitty about this story and yet-
AND YET!!!
There were so many wonderful people who, for some reason, actually fucking liked it. And I don't know what I did to deserve y'all. THANK YOU for sticking through with WE THE YOUNG from start to finish. THANK YOU for the encouraging comments. THANK YOU for the rants about the songs that featured in the different chapters. THANK YOU for supporting Vera and Ashton. THANK YOU for voting and putting the story in your reading lists. THANK YOU!!!
