A few seconds later he comes to the door and opens it quietly . He signals for me to be quiet as he lets me in and sneaks me upstairs into a big bedroom .

He shuts the door carefully before breathing out in relief .

"Hey ." He smiles .

"Wassup ." I reply .

"I'm watching my 3 nephews and they all asleep downstairs so that's why we had to be quiet..."

"Where's your brother ?" I ask .

"Ion know . . . He left a few hours ago ."

"Wait, he left you here to watch 3 toddlers ??"

"Yeah, I'm used to it ." He shrugs .

"Don't you have other things you wanna do ? Like meet up with yo annoying ass girlfriend ?" I raise an eyebrow .

"She ain't my girlfriend, " He chuckles . "but yeah...sometimes I do have places I wanna go but it's all good though . Kentrell's busy and I understand ."

"Aw, that's real sweet of you ." I smile . "Alright, so what did you want to talk to me about ?"

"Oh, uh . . ." He hesitates .

"Come on, I walked all the way here ." I tilt my head to the side .

"I just wanted to apologise again for being so rude to you earlier...I was just mad at my mom and I took it out on you ." He looks down .

"That's ok, don't worry about it ." I reply .

So, you wanted to know why I'm always here and not at home...well... I guess this kinda is my home for now ."

"Why...what happened ?"

"...I-it's a long story and you probably gotta get back so–"

"Hey, I'm not leaving until you tell me what's going on because it's clearly bothering you ."

"Come on Jas, it's not that big a deal ."

I fold my arms and stare at him waiting for an explanation .

"Alright ." He chuckles lightly then takes a deep breath . "So um...I used to live with my mom and my big sister... then one day my mama brought home this dude named Troy saying she was gon marry him or whatever . Then...a few months later I got home from school and I could hear my brother and my mama's boyfriend yelling at each other then they started fighting and I could hear my mama crying . I ain't know what was going on so I just walked back out the house and went to Royalty's instead . After that, my sister moved out and nobody ever told me why . So then...as the time went by, I started to notice little changes in Troy and my mom's behaviour . One night I even heard him hit her and she fell to the floor . I went in to try stop him but his bitch ass knocked me out . Mind you I was only 12 back then so when Kentrell found out he was hella pissed . A few months after that, on my 13th birthday, I was home alone for a little while so I decided to look through his shit to see what I could find....and I found a huuuge stash of crack....and weed....So I finally understood what was making him act so crazy....so can you guess what I did ?"
