"No!," I screamed, trying so hard to let the vision flash once more before my eyes, stabbing my hands wildly into the darkness as if grabbing at something that was just out of reach.

Dizzy and Goth sat up with a start, rubbing sleep from their wide eyes.

"Come back, please, come back to me. Come back and never let me go. Please..."

"Come back, come back," I kept repeating over and over, lost in a trance, until everything had blurred together around me and it was all I could do or find the words to say.

"Clarissa?," Dizzy asked, fear and concern written all over her dimunitive features. She placed a delicate hand on my shoulder and another on my sweat-stained forehead.

"Dizzy..I'm so sorry I didn't make you part of my council...I loved the gown you made me...it was like smoke when I moved...can you make it come back?," I murmured, almost unintelligibly.

"CLARISSA!," Goth shrieked at the top of her lungs. "SNAP OUT OF IT!"

I blinked twice in the light before letting out a huge yawn.

"Thank you," I replied groggily, my midnight-blue hair a mess of tangles all around me and my darkened eyes lined with dust.

"Are you okay? What happened?," Dizzy asked.

"What?," I sprang up in surprise. "Oh, nothing."

"Princess Clarissa of Andalasia, something is going on with you. What is it?," Goth demanded.

I stayed silent and hid beneath my bedclothes.

"Try this. Tell me, or I tell Ryder that you're using him to become a queen."

I begrudgingly sat up on top of the satin ruffles of my bed and cleared my throat.

"Fine," I grumbled.  I told Dizzy and Goth all about my dream. "I had everything I've ever wanted. For once, I didn't aspire to anything more than what I was and the moment I was in. I felt pure, true happiness for the first time. It was happily ever after, Dizzy. It really was."

My eyes misted, and I buried my face in my hands.

"But then it was taken away." Tears welled up in my eyes. "Why couldn't it stay, Dizzy? For once in my life, why can't I hold on to the moment and let it stay?"

My tears gave way to anger, and a mix of fear and fire burned up in my eyes. "That dream should be real." I stabbed a fist into my pillow, tempted to rip apart the beads and ribbons and lacy edges until they floated to the ground like daisies. I shook in bed like an ice cube to keep from incinerating the whole room altogether. "It should be my future!"

Calahan's cold, empty eyes flashed before me like a mirage, once again poring into the truth in my soul. Then it was Mal's blazing green ones and the fire and heart of a dragon. Then the golden rose in Goth's brown hair, the endless sea, and the emerald brooch on Dizzy's nightdress.

They formed a glittering court around me. They held me and never let me go.
