"So, Harry. As you probably know, there will be a huge birthday party for me on Saturday and I would love if you would come." Maddison says, completely ignoring me. She is always only talking to Harry. I asked him if he wanted to come over on Saturday. I really hope he'd rather spend time with me than with her.
"Uhm, yes sure." Harry answers politely and my heart sinks. But Harry, did you forget that you already had plans with me?
"Great, when will you be there?" Maddison asks seeming very pleased with herself.
"I don't know. Kate, when will we come over?" Harry turns towards me and Maddie's smile fades. So he didn't forget me. This fills me with utter delight.
"Whenever you're ready." I say grinning at him.
"Actually, I only invited you, Harry." Maddie whispers quietly.
"Excuse me?" Harry says. "I don't think I didn't understand you very well. Is there a problem?"
Maddison just looks at him, unsure wether she should say something or not.
"No, not at all. Whenever it's fine with you guys, it's fine with me" she says through half-gritted teeth."
"Great. Then we will see you there." Harry says innocently.
Although I'm really grateful for Harry taking me along and standing up for me, I still feel a sting in my heart, knowing that I wasn't invited and that without Harry I would be no one.
It is after school and I am waiting in the parking lot for Logan. I spot him walking out of the building with a huge smile on his face.
"What's with that disturbing grin on your face?" I ask him.
"Oh, I don't know maybe it's just because we, you and I, are going to hang out with the cool kids." He says nudging me.
"Yes, about that. I don't feel very well so I guess you have to go without me." I lie.
"Liar liar pants on fire."
"God, what are you. 6?"
"Yes. And you still are a liar liar pants on fire." he sing songs.
"Would you please stop that?" I say as we are getting into the car.
"Liar liar pants on fire."
"I don't care, I don't care. I can but another pair!" I say exasperated.
"So you admit, that you're lying! Ha! Gotcha!" He says smirking.
"What? No! I really am not feeling well." I say and attempt to cough, but it sounds pathetically unnatural.
"Save your excuses for someone else. We are going." He says determined.
I roll my eyes. "Fine, but you are paying for me."
"You wish, Hawkins."
"Enlighten me then, Lerman. Who is paying gas for the car you are sitting in?"
"Fine. But just this one time."
"Nope." I laugh.
Fiona, the blonde girl from lunch whose name I learned comes to my window and taps at it, motioning me to open it.
"Follow us. We're going to the diner." she says in her annoyed nasal voice.
As soon as she's out of ear-shot I begin talking. "Not very talkative that one, is she?"
We arrive at the diner in no time and I see everyone getting out of their cars. I should go out, too. Logan is already out. I should be able to do it that casually, too. I hate going out. I mean, this is the first time that I am actually going out for a very long time. 7 years. All right, Kate. This is easy. It's just a diner and you just eat the whole time, so you won't have to talk to people. Easy as that.
