It's morning, and a very large bumblebee lands on Bilbo's nose, waking him with a start.
Putting on his jacket, he walks toward the kitchen, where all the dwarves and Gandalf are waiting him. He joins the dwarves standing near the front door. They are arguing about how to get away from Beorn without being seen. Nori says "I say we should leg it and slip out the back way !" Dwalin tells him "I'm not running from anyone, beast or no." Thyri told them before she went outside "There is no point in arguing. We will be unable to make it to Mirkwood without Beorn's help." Gandalf decides to go outside and speak with Beorn. He brings Bilbo with him "This will require some delicate handling. We must tread carefully. The last person to have startled him was torn to shreds." Gandalf told the dwarves to wait inside until he gives the signal that it's safe to come out. Bofur, looking out a high window, asks "What's the signal" But Gandalf and Bilbo have already gone. Gandalf, clearly nervous, announces himself to Beorn, who is chopping wood "Good morning !" Beorn didn't answer and Thyri chuckles as she looks down. Gandalf repeats "Good morning !" Beorn stops and turns slowly to Gandalf "Who are you ?" Gandalf replies "I'm Gandalf. Gandalf the Grey." Beorn says "Never heard of him." Gandalf tells him "I'm a wizard ! Perhaps you've heard of my colleague, Radagast the Brown. He resides in the southern borders of Mirkwood." Beorn asks "What do you want ?" Gandalf replies "Well, simply to thank you for your hospitality. You may have noticed that we took refuge in your lodgins last night." Bilbo, who had been hiding behind Gandalf, pokes his head around for a better look. Beorn spots him and frowns.
*Time Skip*
Beorn pours milk from a pitcher into Fili's cup.He is much taller than any human, even taller than Gandalf. Beorn addresses Thorin "So you are the one they call Oakenshield. Tell me, why is Azog the Defiler hunting you ?" Thorin asks "You know of Azog ? How ?" Beorn tells him "My people were the first to live in the mountains, before the Orcs came down from the north. The defiler killed most of my family, but some he enslaved." Bilbo sees the remnants of manacles on Beorn's wrist. Beorn continues "Not for work, you understand, but for sport. Caging skin-changers and torturing them seemed to amuse him." Bilbo asks "There are others like you ?" Beorn says "Once, there were many." Bilbo asks "And now ?" Beorn says "Now, there are only two." The dwarves, Bilbo, and Gandalf look on in silence. But Thorin, Fili, Kili and Dwalin look at Thyri who is standing next to the door which leads to outside. She watches the horizon.
