Chapter 17

EVAN POV

Today was an amazing day, and here's wh-

CRASH.

JARED POV

I was just scrolling through instagram, doing my daily stalking, when I heard a huge boom sound come from outside.

I walked outside and saw a big ass collision in the middle of the intersection outside my street. I walked out to get a better look. When I got there, I saw Connor screaming at some guy, blood all over the passenger's airbag, then I saw that the passenger was Evan. I held Connor away from the guy who smelled strongly of beer.

"What the hell happened?!"

"Evan and I w-were- and apples- then this fucking dick hit- and Evan's-" he couldn't even put together coherent sentences. I pulled out my phone and dialed 911. I was sobbing loudly, but they understood eventually.

When the call was done, I saw that Connor punched the guy in the face. Twice. Then he collapsed on top of the black car and sobbed until the ambulance arrived.

I sat in the waiting area with Connor until he calmed down. "Are you better now?"

He raised his eyebrow and almost started going off about how not-better he is, but he stopped himself. "No."

"Can you tell me what happened now?"

"Well I took Evan to the orchard."

That was my idea. I told Connor about what Evan likes, and he thought about taking him to the orchard. We planned it a few days ago. I'm glad they got to do it.

"Then when we finished the candy, we left and the drunk guy ran his red light and crashed into Evan."

"Well shit. Wait, Heidi. I'm gonna go find her."

"Kay." He sniffled.

I went to the receptionist to find her, but she walked right past the desk. "Heidi?"

"Oh hi Jar- why are you here? Is everything okay?"

"Um. No."

"What does that me-"

"Connor and Evan went to the orchard then when they drove back, some drunk driver hit the side Evan was on, crushing him kinda."

"WHERE IS HE?"

I led her to the room, but they wouldn't let us in.

CONNOR POV

When we were finally allowed to visit Evan's room, all three of us rushed in as quickly as we could. Heidi was first. Evan smiled and greeted her like he was just lying in bed. Jared was next. He said something that made Evan laugh, but he didn't seem to laugh and smile like he used to a few days ago. Maybe it hurts or something.

I entered last and Evan flinched a little. "Hi."

"H-Hi."

I went to hold his hand, but he looked scared to. "What's wrong?"

"Connor?"

"Yeah..?"

That was when the doctor entered. I looked to him confused, as did Jared and Heidi.

"You guys ran off before I finished. Anyway, what I didn't get to tell you was that he's suffering from mild amnesia. Evan's memory is spotty and fuzzy, so the last few weeks are kind of lost. The car door hit his head pretty hard. Plus, the whiplash."

Jared put his hand on my shoulder. "So, wait, he doesn't know about you and the emails and all that."

I walked out of the room. I got outside and sat against the brick wall of the hospital. I was there for a few minutes, then I walked home. Evan doesn't remember me. And it's all my fault.

EVAN POV

Am I supposed to know Connor? I know his name and I remember he signed my cast a while ago. Was I with him before the crash? If so, why?

And Jared, why is he all nice to me right now? Is it because I'm in the hospital? Did his mom tell him to come here? Anyway, my mom had to go back to work, so it's just me and Jared.

"Hey, Ev?"

"What?"

"You remember me right? I mean I know you know me, but do you remember our whole conversation about us being friends and stuff?"

Huh? "No, not really."

"Oh. Well it was basically me apologizing for how shitty I was to you all the time. I was saying that we're actually friends and that I care about you. I don't hang out with Jake or Rich anymore. Then you got all happy and we hung out more."

"This sounds the slightest bit familiar. Not enough to remember though."

"Okay. That's good, though. And Connor, you know who he is?"

"Sort of. I know his first name, I know he signed my cast, only because it says his name, and maybe he was with me before the crash. If he was, I don't know why."

"He was. But.. Never mind... OH! Do you remember C?"

"How do you know about C?"

"You told me about your emails one day when we were playing truth or dare. Do you know about the one where he told you who he was? Do you know anything about him?"

"He goes to Westerburg, right? Wait, I have them on my phone, right?"

It was a while until I could leave the hospital. I'm still doing physical therapy for my right leg that was smashed in the accident. I have a new broken arm. The right arm this time.

I'm on crutches, so it was difficult getting to the Murphys' house for dinner. Mom is apparently friends with Zoe's mom. Also Connor's mom, I guess.

By the way, he's C?! Connor (Murphy, right?) is my internet best friend and crush?! My mind is blown. I've been trying to learn what all happened during the last few weeks. I'm getting better everyday.
