It was the big day. The day Charlotte had been waiting for for the past year and a half. The day she had spent hours training towards. The fresh smell of horses engulfed her as she made her way past the hundreds of stalls at the racetrack. 4 hours till the race would begin. It was now time to start getting Hunter ready. She could already see his elegant head peering out of his stall. He looked like he was enjoying all the new sites and smells the racetrack had to offer him. They had brought him to the track just last night giving him one nights rest before his debut.

"Hello boy" she said as she kissed his soft forehead. He gave an approving snort and and she let herself into the stall. Cassandra one of the grooms who worked for her father came up to her with a bucket of brushed.

"Need a hand?" she asked. Hunter eyed Cassandra cautiously and she kept her distance from him. It had taken a lot of  effort but Charlotte had finally gotten Hunter to accept Cassandra. She was the only other person other than herself who could get near the colt without him trampling them.

"Yes  please."

Cassandra opened the stall door watching the colts every move checking her didn't try to sneakily bite her when she began to brush him. The two girl both worked together to make sure Hunters coat shone. The nervous energy in Charlotte's body was clearly being sensed by Hunter as he fidgeted around in the stall, biting the edge of the stall door.

"Don't do that you silly." She pushed his nose away to stop him chewing on it. He playfully pushed her back nipping the back of her hand at the same time.

Charlotte laughed a little. It was then that she noticed her dad had appeared at the front of the stall. Worry lines creased his face. He was always worried when she was the one in the racing saddle. Last month Charlotte had gotten her jockeys listen right on her 16th birthday. Her parents had finally agreed to let her get her license on her birthday. She had been overjoyed. She had been in 3 races so far as practice and each time her father looked like a nervous wreck.

"He looks good, we will have the vet quickly check over him and hour before he races." He said carefully analyzing Hunter.

Hunter flicked his ears back at her dad. His nostrils flared and he looked like he would lunge at my dad if he came any closer.

"Calm down boy" She patted him cautiously. Today was not the day she wanted him to take a chunk out of anyone's arm.

The time flew by and before you know it the vet was checking Hunter out. Hunter bared his teeth at the vet and stomped a hoof trying to scare the vet away but thankfully the vet took no notice and continued to watch as the colt made a display of himself.

"He looks in perfect health."  he said after finally getting the chance to get near Hunter to check him over.

Charlotte breathed a sigh of relief. Hopefully that was a good sign that the day was going to go well. Charlotte then went to the changing shed where she dressed into her family's racing silks. The Blue and Pink Diamonds where known to many horse racing enthusiasts as her families colors and she would wear them with pride.  Tucking her hair beneath her helmet she prepped her mind for the race ahead.

She was not looking forward to seeing Hunters reaction to the other horses. They had only just managed to stop him from attacking the other horses he trained with usually what would he think to ones he had never met before. When she got to her post her father was waiting for her. He looked relieved to see her. Hunter was waiting with Cassandra all tacked up and ready to go with the number 4 on his saddle pad. Once again he tried to reach over towards my dad to bite him. Thankfully my dad saw this coming and jumped out of the way in time.

"Still up to his tricks right before the big one" her dad shook his head in disappointment.

Cassandra helped Charlotte into the saddle. She righted herself in the saddle and gave Hunter a pat to assure him it was just her. He moved uneasily beneath her.

"You know what to do now" Her dad nodded towards her reminding her of their plan of attack in the race ahead. Cassandra moved her forwards into the walking ring where the the racing fans eagerly watched analyzing who would be the best to bet on.  Hunter skittered around and snaked his head from side to side. Plenty of people were watching Hunter. He was already known as the runaway colt or the wild colt. Everyone knew who he was.  All of a sudden Hunter reared and tried to get free of Cassandras hold but she was strong and held him back.

A few minutes later it was time to load Hunter into the gate. He jumped around a lot avoiding the little space he was getting pushed into. After a bit of coaxing he jumped in. The gate clanged behind him. Hunter took advantage of this time to try and nip the horse next door. Charlotte scolded him and pulled his head to focus on the race ahead. The seconds ticked by and soon the bell clanged and the gates banged open.

Hunter charged out forgetting the other horses. Charlotte had anticipated this so she let him get to the front. As soon as he had reached the head she tried to pace him. As they rounded the first corner Charlotte looked behind her shoulder to see the other horses bunched up behind her. She carefully reined Hunter towards the rail and guided him waiting for the perfect time to make a move. Charlotte could see a horse moving up on her outside.

Hunter saw this horse and tried speeding up.

"Not yet boy just wait a moment" she reminded him.

They reached the far turn and she let Hunter go. He changed leads and roared down the stretch.  They were flying. In those few second everything was a giant blur. Charlotte could only hear the thunder of Hunters hooves beneath her. Just her and her horse crossing the finish line in first.

The crowd went wild. Hunter wouldn't stop no matter how hard she tried. The were almost quarter way round when he finally slowed. Charlotte couldn't help the smile that spread across her face.

"We did it boy!"

She gave him a pat on the neck and walked him back towards where her family was waiting. Cassandra beamed up at her with Hunters lead in hand. Her father walked up and patted her on the back. Hunter flattened his ears but was too tired to try any biting this time.

"Still doesn't like me the cheeky thing" her father joked. "You won by 5 lengths" he told her.

She was shocked. What an impressive start to Hunters career.

Cassandra walked Hunter into the Winners circle where their photo was taken. Somebody from the crowd threw a rose in at Hunter. He notice it and reached out to lip at it on the ground. Charlotte laughed. They had finally done it :)
