Year 60

Christmas has always been my favorite holiday
And this particular December 25th is no different
Telling me not to worry
About the bit of Arthritis you have
You encourage me to sit on your lap

I beam at you in your adorable Santa hat
Leaning in to peck the sweetest lips
Which currently taste of eggnog
Oh, and miss,
I'm aware that you spiked that nog
When you thought I wasn't paying attention

The air smells of cinnamon
Freshly baked chocolate chip cookies
And the ham within the oven

Sounds of laughter and chatter
Stemming from family and friends
Permeate our den
Along with the carols playing

My beam broadens
As I look toward the two grandchildren
We have thus far
Attempting to play with more than one new toy at a time

Hopefully by next year we'll have at least
An extra grandchild to dote on
As our eldest and her husband
Are trying for another

Turning to gaze down at you
I massage the nape of your neck
Studying your glow
Which would make Santa jealous

You're happy
I'm happy
They're happy

Some say perfection isn't attainable
Yet that day I begged to differ
