Marion Van Arkel's eyes scanned the screen. Everything looked ok. She took a deep breath. Her entire career rested on the next 30 seconds. It couldn't go wrong. If she got fired after this, she'd never find another job. Nuclear scientists like herself were a rarity in today's society. The stigma surrounding them was unreal. People heard the term and immediately thought she was secretly plotting to destroy the world. That couldn't be further from the truth. Granted, she had nearly sold all the remaining uranium from her family's mine to a criminal mastermind, but in her new job with the GDF, she was working on a way to improve the efficiency of explosives but also in a way that didn't generate harmful radiation. It could open a whole new world for the GDF.
This was it. The moment of truth. Adrenaline coursed through her veins as she hit the button. Sirens went off. Radioactive signs flashed. "Please evacuate the facility. Nuclear reaction underway." The automated voice blared. Marion took a deep breath before fleeing.
"BOOM!"A massive explosion shook the faciltiy. Marion peered through the window of the emergency bunker and gasped. The experiment worked.
For better or worse, she'd discovered a dangerous secret. So, I haven't changed that much with this chapter but I've added a bit more context to what Marion discovered. Hope you liked it!
