Jisoo awoke peacefully.
The sky was a burnt orange. She couldn't tell if it was the sunrise or the sunset.
The trees were whistling and the wind was soft.
Then the pain kicked in.
Her shoulder was throbbing from the gunshot. Where was Jennie? Had she been abandoned?
She tried to sit up but it hurt too bad, instead she just lifted her neck.
She was laying in some shrubbery behind a Quick-Mart, a tiny shop full of nicknacks and tourist souvenirs.
Jisoo combed her fingers through her long, black hair. Feeling every inch of her existence, shocked she wasn't dead.
"Oh my god. She's not dead."
Jennie was kneeling over Jisoo, holding something in her hands.
Jisoo felt her heart race a mile a minute. Jennie hadn't left her. She was okay.
"The store just closed so I stole a first aid kit. You've been knocked out for an hour or two now."
"How'd we get here?" Jisoo struggled to say, her voice raspy.
"I carried you...with a little help of a high school friend."
Jisoo cranked her neck to the side and saw a tall girl, pretty with long orangish hair and choppy bangs.
"This is Lisa."
Jisoo waved. The girl was lanky, she was wearing clothes that looked like they belonged to a hitchhiker. However, her skin was so clear and her eyes were so big.
"Nice to meet ya." She jumped down, closing the shop window. She was clutching a bag of candy that she stole. "I've known Jennie since freshman year. We had a falling out but we reunited in the forest. Sorry for shooting your shoulder."
Jisoo raised her eyebrows.
"Hold on. She shot me? And you're letting her tag along?"
"Hey hey hey!" Jennie checked Jisoo's pulse, trying to calm her down. "She didn't mean to. Don't waste your strength, okay?"
Jisoo sat up even though her shoulder was screaming for her to lay back down.
"No! Why'd you shoot me? How'd you find us? What is going on? I-"
Jisoo fell back to the grass. Jennie had knocked her out with the first aid kit.
"She can be chatty sometimes."
Lisa brushed off her clothes. "Listen. It was just a slip up! I went hunting and I thought the girl was a deer."
"Kind of crazy how life works. You look good!"
"You've never looked better."
Lisa and Jennie talked for awhile, waiting for Jisoo to wake back up. It was pitch black now, and the stars were twinkling.
"What's prison like?" Lisa cocked her head curiously.
Jennie sighed, keeping her eyes on the moon. "It's hell. There are people in there worse than me. I got an ass kickin' one too many times."
"Jennie Kim? Getting beaten up?" Lisa laughed, brushing her hair back in the night breeze. "I didn't think I'd ever hear that."
"Me either."
"Life here hasn't been too good either. I got kicked out. My parents said I was smoking too much."
"You're an addict?"
"Kind of hard not to be." Lisa played with her fingers.
"Do you have a place to stay?" Jennie was more concerned than she usually is about topics.
"No. But I'm fine. It's been this way for two years. I kind of just float around. I'm like you, but I don't have a criminal record."
Jennie sighed. "Life is rough."
"Once the news about you breaking out scoured, I was a little ecstatic. I was hoping I'd run into you."
"I guess the stars aligned."
"Yeah. Don't know what my parents would say if they heard you and I reunited."
"Well they would definitely know we'd be the most dangerous team there ever was."
"No kidding. We're the only gang to run the game in high heels." Lisa lifted her foot and the two laughed, getting drunk on the feeling. Just being together was more fun than either had experienced since sophomore year.
"You're just the same, Jennie Kim. Even after all these years." Lisa broke a smile.
"Really? You'd think murder would change a person."
"Ha! Not you."
Jennie traced the dirt as Jisoo layed in the tall grass.
"Is she ever gonna wake up?" Lisa said, reading Jennie's mind.
"She will. And she'll be mad."
"Who even is she? Why's she your tag along?"
Jennie searched through her memories of the past days. "I kind of held her as a hostage. But we have a connection."
"I can tell she likes you." Lisa whispered, the moonlight illuminating the girls.
Jennie tried to hide it, but her smile was the most obvious thing.
"We should get some sleep." Lisa pondered, yawning.
The three girls hid in the tall grass. But Jennie wasn't tired just yet.
She stared up at the stars, connecting them and tracing them.
Everything was falling into place.
Somehow.
