When Lisa awoke, she made it loud and clear."Holy crap I forgot we were on this thing." The train shook violently as she rubbed her head.
The girls laughed.
The sky was a misty gray, curling up at the sides like ends of paper charred from a lighter. The trees bore a deep emerald that faded to black from shadows.
Lisa's orange hair was sticking up in all sorts of places, curling and twisting and splitting at the ends. She rubbed her head and blinked her eyes.
Jennie and Jisoo were separated now. Jennie felt a red hot embarrassment. She didn't like to be "cutesy" but goddamnit Jisoo was hard to resist.
Was this character development? Jennie pondered as the train skidded to a stop in the middle of a misty town.
She snapped out of her head as the wheels made a crackling sound against the track- like fireworks going off.
Jisoo quickly sheltered her ears from the noise and Lisa's eyebrows furrowed.
They all yawned and Jennie gathered her things. I'm not soft. I'm a murderer. I don't have time for relationships. But she took one glance at the girl with deep smoky hair and melted.
"Woah..." Lisa exhaled, climbing to her feet. "Where are we?"
"Looks abandoned; vacant. I've got chills." Jisoo rubbed her bare arms
"Let's grab our stuff and go. We don't want the conductor spotting us, or he'll throw me right back where I started." Jennie heaved as she brought the backpack to her shoulders. She was stealing some wine from the train cart.
Lisa put an arm around Jisoo. "I'm starting to doubt this whole mission. Like- this motherfucker doesn't even have a plan." She pointed to Jennie and doubled over, laughing long and hard.
Jisoo cracked a smile but Jennie didn't even blink.
"I bet she doesn't even know what city were in-"
"Yeah I don't. But it looks like some ghost shit." Jennie teased lightly. But she wasn't wrong, the place was scary as hell.
Jennie and Lisa jumped off the train cart and into the tall yellow grass. It snipped at their legs and began to itch. The mist was hanging over them like an umbrella.
Jennie reached out a hand and helped jisoo out.
The slight touch of their warm fingers together against the cold dew of the sticky air felt so close to magic. A rising and falling of heart rates. It was so subtle, but it drove the girls mad.
The three of them walked through the yellowing grass towards a big, wooden shack amongst a small town. Everything was peeling and the ends of the boards had nails in obscure places. Windows were boarded up and vines were climbing, scaling, mapping the old bench on the porch.
"My god, we're ghostbusters now." Lisa said thinking out loud, her breath escaping her body in visible motions like watching your own soul leave you.
Jisoo put a hand on one of the wooden beams supporting the house. She dug her finger into the little cracks and holes and felt the cold sting of the nails.
"Seriously wondering where we are right now." Lisa looked around, her mouth hanging open. Red had already reached her face because of the cold, her cheeks were rosy and covered in goosebumps. But her heartbeat was steady and she didn't even shiver.
"So what do we do now?" Jisoo looked to Jennie.
Jennie had a look on her face that wasn't normal. She seemed like she had given up. "Uh...I don't really know. I was hoping the train would stop somewhere a little more...-"
"Civilized?" Lisa asked in a cocky tone.
"We could still catch another ride, the train hasn't left." Jisoo pointed into the distance.
But the other girls shook their heads violently.
"I need to stretch my legs, the wooden floor of the cart gave me aches all over." Lisa made an uncomfortable face.
"Then should we go in?" Jisoo stepped onto the porch. It made all kinds of unusual sounds and creaks. The girls felt uneasiness wash over them.
"I mean...there's probably no one in there anyways." Jennie stepped onto the porch as well, the same horrible sounds echoing.
Lisa rubbed her arms. "Uhhhh..." She inhaled in a shaky tone. "I'll stay out here. I don't really want to be dragged by my feet from a ghost this early in the morning."
Jennie and Jisoo found each other's hands and gripped on tight. They were both so cold and doubled over, trying to get any sort of heat.
"Well...go on." Jennie encouraged Jisoo to open the old wooden door.
And what they saw inside made their guts clench with fear.
