I watched with caution as Aphrodite made her way into my room.
"Arty, she began, "you must understand -"
I cut her off with a dirty look. "Don't call me Arty", I threatened. "And if this has anything to do with my hunters, then I don't want to know."
Aphrodite swallowed carefully. "Um... well, you see...". She blundered on with her blabbering for a bit, while I ignored her.
Finally, I lost it. "Just tell me already!"
She gulped. "ThalialikesNico", she blurted.
"WHAT!?" I demanded angrily. "You ruin everything!"
Aphrodite looked really upset. "It's the only way for Percabeth to stay together!" she wailed.
I stopped in my tracks. I was most certainly not interested in couples, but everyone knew the tale of Percabeth. How they had suffered Tartarus for each other, a place where not even Hades himself would dare go. And apparently they had broken up.
"You let Percabeth get out of hand?!" I demanded. It had been the only ship I'd ever approved of.
Aphrodite nodded weakly.
I moaned in frustration. "Well... do whatever it takes to fix it!" I relented.
I would be loosing a Hunter.
But Camp would be gaining two couples.
It seemed only fair. And I trusted Thalia wouldn't choose any foolish males.
True, the last time I'd seen the Nico boy he'd been an immature little child who was addicted to his ridiculous MythoMagic game.
But apparently, through hardships and suffering, he'd become a tragic hero.
And his sister Bianca had been a Hunter...
"Yes", I decided. "Phoebe can be my new lieutenant, if Thalia accepts. Remember, you'd better ask her before you change her life forever."
Aphrodite did her giggly jump and clapper her hands.
She left the room with a bright smile.
Later we were gathered in the throne room for a daily meeting. Zeus, who had apparntly been observing mortals, asked us each to tell him what we had achieved today.
"I made the demigods miserable!" Dionysus cheered. "Well, except for that small group. They're just impossible." He got a few dirty looks.
"Well, I claimed my newest daughter, Robin Orchida!" grinned Demeter. "And she's still twelve!"
I smiled at her and she smiled back. "It's too early to tell," Demeter continued. "But in a few years you may have a new hunter!"
My heart leaped.
"I made a new weapon for Ares", grunted Hephaestus.
"And I tested it!" called Ares.
"I sang a Haiku for the birds!" said my brother. "Do you want to hear it? Birds of a feather -"
"No!" We all yelled.
"I let go one of my hunters", I said sadly. "But for a good cause, right?" I looked at Aphrodite questioningly.
"Right", Aphrodite beamed. I got back together Jiper, Percabeth, and I got Thalico!!!"
All of us clapped. It was a pretty big achievement on her behalf.
"I delivered mail", Hermes sighed.
"I stopped a freak accident on the road by flooding it a little so the cars went another road", Poseidon said casually.
"Oh, really?" challenged Zeus. "I made it rain in the same spot! Heavy rain!"
Poseidon rolled his eyes. "That was why I had to flood the road".
Zeus blushed and fell silent.
"I stayed asleep all day", Hera smiled sleepily.
Well, that's a surprise. Oh, well. Never mind.
"I finished my book!" called Athena. "Once some boys finally shut up."
I smiled, and we all sat contentedly.
Moo, said Bessie.
Song lyrics for this chappie! The Hanging Tree, from The Hunger Games.
Are you, are you
Coming to the tree
Where they strung up a man they say murdered three.
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met up at midnight in the hanging tree.
Are you, are you
Coming to the tree
Where the dead man called out for his love to flee.
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met up at midnight in the hanging tree.
Are you, are you
Coming to the tree
Where I told you to run so we’d both be free.
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met up at midnight in the hanging tree.
Are you, are you
Coming to the tree
Wear a necklace of rope, side by side with me.
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met up at midnight in the hanging tree.
