Alexander and Thomas ran around the house in a frenzy and started throwing things into their respectful places. “You assembled the bed right?” Alex called from downstairs and he heard a quick “yes” coming from the basement were there bedroom was, Alex gulped as he tied his shoe and then slipped on a jacket, today was the day he and Thomas were going to the orphanage to pick out a child..the concept was strange to Alexander, picking out a child didn’t sound right it sounded like they were getting a dog or something. Alex had been married to his husband for about four years now and they had been talking about a family for about two years.
At first they started with a cat in there second year of marriage deciding that they were too busy for a dog and a cat has enough self efficacy for it to take care of itself while Alexander and Thomas were in the office. They named him Phillip, phillip the cat and they both ended up loving him like a actual child instead of a pet. Alexander looked over to the chocolate brown tabby just then, he was sitting on the counter licking his left paw and the bell collar jingling lightly with his movements. Around a year after having Phillip Thomas brought up the topic of kids and at first Alex wasn’t sure, he was happy in his quite house--well quite when him and Thomas weren’t debating--and it just being him, his husband and they’re cat. Though then Alex thought of how lonely the house was when Thomas was gone and he realized that all of Thomas’ sisters had kids and so did his cousins and Alexander knew that Thomas felt like he was behind and that he wanted to be up to speed. So Alexander told Thomas he would think about it and within a month the whole ‘having a kid’ idea was exciting and Alexander wanted it too though they decided to wait until they were sure they were ready and now here they were about to leave for the orphanage.
“Daelin’ your spacing out again” Alexander blinked and looked at his husband and smiled and kissed his plump lips.
“Just thinking about our future.” Thomas smiled and they walked out the door and too the car that had a car seat in the back for a small human, Thomas was the one who drove and Alexander buckled up in the passenger seat. Most of the drive was them going over all the stuff they had prepared and if they had everything. “So what age should we shoot for?” Alexander finally asked, they got a toddler sized bed and attaching side rails but they never really set anything in stone, hell they didn’t even know what gender they were getting so they just painted the room a soft yellow as a gender-neutral option.
“Uh well..I was thinking no older than six.” Alexander thought for a moment, personally he felt like he was doing something self betraying sense he knew what if felt like being a older orphan and nobody wanting him because he was ‘too old’ but he too wanted a small child and a person he could help teach and develop instead of a half grown child that would be gone in about 8 years or so, Alexander also thought that all there supplies was for a younger child anyway so even if he were to object they had nothing for a teenager or anyone older than 7 so he just nodded.
“Sounds good.” Thomas glanced at him noticing the pause in his response and half agreeing eyes. Though Alexander just smiled at him and then turned on the radio to a Eminem song, he loved rap and hip hop, he grew up with it but Thomas gasped.
“Oh no! I am not listening to this!” Thomas switched it to old Jazz music with a man that was one of Thomas’ favorites, Charles Coltrane and Alexander cringed. The man wasn’t bad but in a life changing moment Alexander wanted to listen to something familiar to him like the rebellious and loud rap music he would hear in the streets of Navis and the old run down apartment he used to live in with Peter his cousin that died and after that he would listen to anything that yelled emotion and feeling in his ears at all the foster homes and orphanages he bounced around in as a child and teenager.
“Nope!” Alexander turned the station back to Eminem and Thomas groaned “Don’t you know that the passenger is the official DJ?” Alex laughed as he sunk into the few seconds of familiarity he had before it was switched.
