A/N (11/1/18) Here's a little recap of where we are in the story in case anyone needs a refresher. I hope you all enjoy! And thank you so much for reading (and your continued support <3 Thank you for all the messages and comments. Like seriously, everything you guys say means so much)
Shen is Ethel's imprint, but she can't be welcomed into the Silvermoon Pack (our pack) because she's a Dawn refugee currently caring for her orphaned niece, Fei.
Fei's mindlink is still connected to both the Bloodmoon and Dawn packs (i.e. the packs responsible for the multiple attempts on Mia's life).
Mia is looking for a way to break Fei's mindlink, so the little girl can stay with Shen and the Silvermoon Pack. Meanwhile, the triplets are going to petition the elders to make a new peace deal between all of the packs (that way Bloodmoon and Dawn can be stopped before war breaks out, or at least everyone will know it's not our fault).
The only way to break mindlink is a secret skill known only by a specific sect of the werewolf community. The only living descendent that knows this trick is Mr. Reynolds' (the old man's) son—Rey. Rey just so happens to be the man who broke Suzie's family apart. He's her mother's (the nurse's/the doctor's) imprint, mate, and husband.
On top of all of this chaos, Mia's mom has invited Carson over to dinner tonight. She's still under the impression that Mia cheated on Carson with one of his brothers, so Mia plans to set the record straight by inviting all of the brothers over (without her parents' knowledge) and confessing the fact that they are in a polyamorous relationship. Michael has also invited Onai over as his boyfriend. The thing is, Michael hasn't told his parents nor his younger siblings that he's gay yet.
---
Michael keeps his eyes on the road. "So this guy's going to help Fei join the pack?"
"... Essentially," I say.
"Then why does everyone seem so..." Michael furrows his brow. He looks towards the rearview mirror. Onai's in the backseat with Ethel and Shen. None of them have said much since the brothers and I introduced the plan in the first place. I can see why. The man we're going to supposedly hates hybrids, non-Silvermoon werewolves, humans, kids, etc.
Before I can find a way to express that to Michael without revealing the fact that Onai isn't actually half-vampire, Fei screams.
I jump.
She pats her hand against the backseat window. "Look," she screams excitedly. "Look."
Shen pulls her away, but Fei's right back at it again in seconds, tapping her tiny fingers against the glass.
Morning light filters into Onai's car through the treetops. We drive as far up the mountain as possible, winding with the road as it turns from pavement to gravel to dirt.
"Pull it closer," Onai says.
Silence.
He repeats himself, but still, no one answers.
"Who's he talking to?" Michael asks.
I shrug like I don't know. I'm in the passenger seat, so I can clearly see Shen glaring at Onai in the rearview mirror. Ethel looks between them—Onai to his left, Shen to his right. Fei mimics his behavior.
"She needs to breathe, you know," Shen says. "She's still getting over her cold."
"Just do it," Onai says.
Thank god Ethel's in between them. Shen's blue eyes flash gold. "What do you want me to do? Suffocate her?"
"You'd have to be pretty dedicated to kill her with a blanket."
