Shadow sat with Lightsky, learning the herbs. She learned fast and knew almost all the herbs and their uses. Lightsky was becoming very skilled in fighting. Lightsky continued to talk about herbs and the ways of a med cat.

Shadow looked at the distance. She was not thinking about anything certain. She thought about little things like the whispers of the wind or the color of a rabbit.

"Shadow! Are you paying attention?" Lightsky nudged Shadow, snapping her out of her thoughts.

"Uh, yes. I. I am listening..." Shadow said, her voice trailing off as she watched a brown rabbit in the bush. There was suddenly a flash of white fur running into the bush. Shadow narrowed her eyes as her brother stepped out of the bush with the rabbit hanging limply from his mouth.

"Wheres Black

frost?" Lightsky asked Lake, in a friendly tone. Sometimes Shadow wondered how Lightsky was usually nice but Shadow was usually very hostile.

"He just wanted to do a little hunting on his own." Lake answered.

Lightsky looked up to the sky. it smelled of smoke and the sky was getting darker. Shadow looked up and Lightsky's eyes widened. The smoke became thicker and there were flashes of orange.

"Fire!" Lightsky yowled. "Run now! Go to the boulder on the other side of the lake!" She nudged her kits but Shadow didnt leave.

"What about you and father!?" Shadow struggled to speak because of the thick smoke.

"Ill find him. Please go. Ill meet you there. I love you, my precious kit." Lightsky mewed and nudged Shadow wanting her to run from the terrible flames. Shadow began to run but Lightsky was nowhere in sight. Shadow ran as fast as she could. She suddenly stopped. She turned and stared at the flames feeling the heat of the burning trees.

She coughed feeling the smoke slowly fill her lungs. She turned and ran from the flames when a burning tree feel in front of her. It was so close to Shadow that a branch feel on her left paw. She yowled in pain but ran the other way slightly limply. She say the lake as she heard a roar of thunder. She ran to boulder but none of her kin was there waiting for her.

Tears began to roll down her cheeks. She climbed up the boulder trying to ignore the burning pain in her paw.  She sat down and stared at the burning forest hoping her kin will come soon. There was a flash of lightning then rain started to pour from the sky. Shadow waited for a long time never taking her eyes for a forest. She finally realized that they may never make it back.

She sat in the rain crying out for her kin to return to her. "Please! Come back Mama! Please! You cant leave me here alone!" She cried out like a lost kit. She yowled and shouted for her family for many hours. She finally stopped but tears were still coming from her silver eyes.

She lied her head down and watched the heavy rain make the fire die down. "Please come back to me..." She whispered as sleep took over her.
