Veronica and Arek stood outside the building, waiting for the chauffeur to bring the car. Veronica's attention was drawn to a sleek, black vehicle approaching. As the car drew nearer, she recognized it as a Maybach 62—an exceptionally luxurious model. Her curiosity piqued; she wondered who could be the fortunate owner of such a costly car.
When the vehicle came to a halt in front of them, Arek's voice broke her reverie. "Ms. Ray, get in."
Veronica's jaw dropped in astonishment. She glanced back and forth between Arek and the car, unable to process the situation.
"Ms. Ray, you appear surprised," Arek noted with amusement.
Veronica, still in shock, muttered, "I suppose I'm the lucky one."
Arek caught her remark and, intrigued, asked, "Excuse me?"
Ignoring his question, Veronica moved to enter the passenger seat when Arek intervened. "Where do you think you're going, Ms. Ray?"
Puzzled and anxious, Veronica glanced nervously at Arek. The last thing she wanted was to be publicly reprimanded. Sensing her discomfort, Arek softened his tone. "Ms. Ray, please take the back seat."
Relieved, Veronica complied and slid into the back of the car, with Arek joining her shortly. As she settled into the plush interior, she was struck by the opulence of the surroundings—rich wooden accents and luxurious finishes.
The chauffeur's voice interrupted her admiration. "Where to, Mr. Alden?"
"To the nearest clothing store," Arek replied.
Veronica shot Arek a questioning look. "He didn't let me study the files because he wanted to shop? He's truly an insufferable, self-obsessed man," she muttered to herself.
"Did you just say something?" Arek asked, amusement evident in his tone.
Veronica chose to ignore him, focusing on the second file instead.
"Ms. Ray, how long do you plan to ignore me? You do realize I'm your boss, correct?" Arek inquired, still amused.
"Of course, the evil boss," Veronica muttered under her breath, struggling to suppress a smile. When she met Arek's gaze, she found him watching her with curiosity.
"I am very aware that you're my boss. And I am not ignoring you. You instructed me to review these files before the investor meeting. I still have one left," Veronica replied with a composed expression.
"Ms. Ray, are you the eldest or youngest in your family?" Arek asked suddenly.
"Youngest," Veronica responded.
"That explains a lot," Arek remarked.
"What do you mean?" Veronica asked, her confusion evident.
"That's why you're acting like this," Arek said, pointing to her.
"Like what?" Veronica asked, increasingly perplexed.
"A spoiled brat," Arek answered with a smirk.
Veronica's eyes flared with anger. If looks could kill, Arek would be in serious trouble. She realized she'd have to endure Arek's comments for the duration of her internship, so she quickly turned her gaze away.
Arek waited for a rebuttal, but none came. Instead, the chauffeur announced, "Mr. Alden, we've arrived."
Veronica saw the store's name, Black Lapel, emblazoned on the sign. It was Manhattan's premier custom-made formalwear boutique—and one of the most expensive.
