Chapter Six

A loud screeching sound met my ears, causing me to flinch and instinctively reach up to press my hands against them to muffle the sound. But that didn't completely drown out the ear-splitting crash that followed.

My body lurched forward, but something stopped me from flying out of my seat, even if that meant it was constricting against my waist, torso, and sides. I cried out at the pain that was crushing my ribs, and the fact it was making breathing difficult.

Wherever I was, it was overwhelmingly dark. The only source of light was a faint amberish glow that was coming from somewhere behind me. I fumbled around, trying to get whatever was around me off so that I could move freely. It took awhile, but eventually, it did snap off. The amber glow was brighter by now, and my eyes were adjusting little by little, making my surroundings a bit easier to make out.

There were what looked like two people sitting in seats a small distance in front of me. They looked to be more trapped than I had just been. They weren't moving an inch. And I soon figured out why....

It continued to get a little brighter, bit by bit, allowing me to make out the scene in front of me. There was some kind of metal that looked to be caved in towards me, and I could tell that it had been crushed against whoever was in the seats in front of me. My body hesitated, but eventually moved closer to get a better look despite how much pain it was in. I had to help them if I was able to.

It was too late...whatever this metal was, it had crushed the legs of the people in front of me, along with parts of their torso. But that wasn't all. Chunks of glass, some large and some small, were embedded into their skin. It ranged from their arms, the parts of torso I could still see....even in their eyes and face...How much blood was visible around me was making me sick to my stomach.

I fell back from the shock of the dead bodies in front of me, which only made my ribs feel like they were on fire. I curled up into a ball, resisting the urge to hold onto my sides since I knew touch would make the pain worse. There was something cutting into my skin, most likely the glass shards that were all around me. Every breath of air my lungs managed to suck in felt like acid going down my throat, and it felt like my lungs were incredibly heavy on top of that.

This amber glow around me...it wasn't just some random glow of light...it was gradually getting hotter in here. Eventually, I could see small flames continue to work their way near me. It was only then that I realized just where I was.

This was a car...Whoever had been driving crashed, the impact killing the two in the front seats. That's why the metal had crushed them...That's why I felt strangled when I first woke up, it had been from the seatbelt....And that's why there were flames closing in around me....

What was I going to do...? At this rate...I would be killed too...I would slowly burn to death...

I didn't have the time to even attempt an escape from the car. My eyes were drooping from their extremely heavy weight, and a huge wave of dizziness had hit me hard when I tried to sit back up.

I couldn't pass out at a time like this! But my body wasn't listening to me. I was gradually losing the little consciousness I had left. All I could hope for was that I wouldn't wake up and feel the horrible sensation of being burned alive.

I had gotten lucky. When I woke up, I was in a hospital bed. Bandages were wrapped around my chest, and it felt like there were some wrapped around the top of my head as well. The lights were off, and from the window that looked outside, I could tell it was just barely approaching dawn.
