"Summer, can you get me that bowl over there?"I reached for the bowl and handed to my mother as she prepared dinner.
My name is Summer Rosaline.I'm 18 years old and I live in Broward County, Florida.I go to West Broward High School. That school either makes you or breaks you.I love it since I have my friends Maria and Laila. They always know how to keep me company.
I live with my mom all alone. It was hard on us sometimes but we got by.My dad walked out on us when I was younger so I never met him.
"So, honey, I hear that we're getting three new students tomorrow at the school."My mother is the principal at my school. She knows all of the students like she knows the back of her hand.
"That's great, I have my friends already so - why should I care?"I'm a huge introvert.I still don't remember how I even became friends with my girls.
"Summer, this would be a great opportunity for you to get to know more people other than Maria or Laila.I know you love them, but now its time to venture out, break out of your shell."She was right.I do need more friends than Maria and Laila. They won't always be around.
"Okay, I'll see.But, I can't promise anything."I said, poking my food around.
"Good, I want to see you be more vibrant.I'm sure they're going to be swell students."I looked up at her and looked back down.
"Okay, mom, I said I'll see.I have to get to know them first."
"Duh, silly, I just want to see you happy, that's all."My mom has always wanted the best for me.I just shut myself out.I never want to show my face anywhere and I always avoid places with a bunch of people, unless I'm with Maria or Laila.
"Thanks, mom."I shot her a smile of sincerity at her and continued to eat my food.
"No problem, baby.Go ahead and finish up.I'm going to go to bed to be ready for tomorrow.I love you."My mother came up to me and kissed my forehead and continued into the kitchen.I finished up and went to my room and group FaceTimed my girls."Hey, girls."They answered, simultaneously.
"Hey, girls, what y'all doing?"Maria said. She was the vibrant one out of all of us.She was also very outgoing and never shy.
"Nothing, I'm just finishing up my homework."Laila said writing something down. She was more like me.She was always studying, but she isn't shy - at all.
"Nothing much.I just got done having dinner with my mom.Tell me why she told me that we're getting 3 new kids tomorrow at school.Isn't that crazy?"They both looked up at me and smiled.
"What?"I was, high key confused.
"Are they niggas or -?"Maria asked, happily.
"I'm not sure.My mom wants me to become friends with them, though."
"Girl, if they are, there's one for each of us."Laila said, twirling her hair.
"You guys are crazy.Even if they are, I don't date and you guys know that.I'm scared to."I didn't like the idea of dating or being heartbroken. They have both been down that road and it wasn't pretty, but I was still there for each of them.
"Ugh, come on, Summer. You have to break out of your shell one day."Maria whined.Laila nodded in agreement.
"I'll think about it, but if their girls, that will save me a heartbreak."They both laughed at my remark.
"Whatever, Summer, I gotta go, I'll see you in school."Maria said before hanging up.
"Yeah, I'm about to hit the bed."Laila said before hanging up, as well.
"Okay, goodnight guys."I said waving at them. They both said goodnight back and hung up.I climbed into bed and began to think.Tomorrow could be the start of something new....or maybe not.
