Some things don’t go according to plan. This school year had definitely been wild. But the wild might totally be a new experience you never want to miss out on ever again. It could be scary, and leave your stomach lurching and your knees wobbling like rollercoasters do. But picture it this way. The thrill of all the twists and turns and bobbing up and down about twenty four times in a span of three seconds feels extraordinary. You feel this sense of bravery, and like you could take on the entire world, and feel like you want to die in the next split second.
Well, since school is out and I’m finally onto my freshman year of college, I might as well tell you what other plans might be available.
Jared has been telling me all of his plans as to what college he should go to. I literally had to talk him out of growing up to be a middle aged man with fifty cats who makes money on his mixtapes. Not that it’s a bad idea, but.. okay, it’s an awful idea. I just didn’t want to break that to him.
Alana is trying to get into Harvard, which honestly didn’t really surprise me. Plus, she got in, which.. didn’t really surprise me either.
Jared stepped up and asked me ow;o7ytvnv , ,, ,j
Evan slammed his laptop closed, as Jared had unknowingly sneaked up behind him and pounded on his keyboard. Luckily, Jared pulled his hand back just in time.
“I swear if you’re writing about my mixtapes on your silly blog, then I’m gonna kick your ass,” Jared teased, the corner of his lips turning up into a smirk.
That was exactly what Evan had been doing. “H..H-How’d you know about my, um, my blog?” he asked, fumbling with the hem of his shirt.
Jared snorted, grabbing the laptop from Evan before he could protest. “I know more than you think, Evan. You think all I know how to do is backdate e-mails, but for your information, I have more than three brain cells. Unlike somebody I know.” He snickered and his eyes began to dart along Evan’s screen, reading over what he had written.
Evan felt violated. What else could Jared know? He wasn’t hiding very much from him. Even if he did let those blog posts out to the public, it felt more like shouting to an empty stadium, and he did not want Jared to be reading into his thought process. “Hey, uh, Jared? Tho-Tho-Those are kind of my personal.. journals, I guess, and I’d-”
It was too late. Jared had finished reading, like he had intended. His fingers began to rapidly type more letters and words. Evan forgot that Jared was really experienced at this kind of thing. Not because he was educated in school, but because he probably spent his entire days looking at memes or some shit.
“Cute,” Jared cackled, grinning the way he did when he was plotting something Evan didn’t usually agree with.
Evan felt his face heat up. He didn’t want Jared to say anything about this. What was he typing, anyway? “Jared, my mom bought a whole new supply of Caprisuns, so why don’t you have some of those while I finish?” he suggested.
Jared pushed his index finger to the bridge of his glasses, and pushed them further up his nose. “Mm,” he hummed, “Tempting. But I wanna make your blog great again.”
Evan sighed, knowing Jared wouldn’t relent, and he was too tired to argue against this. “I guess I’ll go get them by myself, then.”
Jared didn’t look up from the screen. “Knock yourself out, Hansen.” He gave a thumbs up. Evan weakly smiled and gave him a thumbs up in exchange.
If he wanted to make closer friends, he might as well let them in on personal secrets about himself.
He returned a few moments later with a pouch in his hand, and he handed it to Jared. “Here.”
Jared snatched the juice pouch and sucked the life out of it like he was some sort of Caprisun vampire.
“Are you done yet?” Evan slumped over his bed, trying to catch a single glimpse of the disaster Jared was unleashing onto his blog. But Jared just hunched even more, blocking his vision with his shoulders. “Just trust me on this.” Since he was on the floor, he scooted and sat with his face towards Evan.
Evan gave up at this point, and he crossed his arms behind his head, boredly staring at the ceiling. There wasn’t much else he could do. He was itching to ask Jared something, but at the same time, he did not want to. Jared could be your most supportive and annoying friend. They cancel each other out most of the time.
“Jared?” he asked after a long moment.
“What’s up, Ev?”
“My mom said I could bring a friend along if-if-if I wanted.. we were gonna go to Oregon and stay in a cabin, and..”
Jared gave his signature Cheshire cat grin. “What? Are you asking me to hang out? With you?” he sneered. Before Evan could respond, he snorted. “Yeah, yeah, I’ll come. I can’t believe that you’re asking me instead of Zoe, though. Thought you might want a bit of action with her.” He snickered.
Evan’s face bloomed into a dark shade of red. More out of embarrassment than anything. “I don’t like her like that anymore, you know this.”
Jared just continued to tease, which was perfectly in his nature. If he wasn’t teasing, then something was definitely wrong. “Ah. So you want a bit of action with me. That’s kinda gay, Ev.” He winked.
Evan just scoffed. “You know I’m not,” he said dismissively. “Anyway, we’re leaving this weekend and staying for about five days. You should pack tonight,” he suggested.
Jared nodded. “Aye aye, Captain.” He saluted and got up, striding off. Evan practically dove for his laptop, and he turned the screen around.
Jared had finished what he had written. There wasn’t anything weird he did to Evan’s blog either, which really shocked Evan.
Oh, except that his profile picture was now an image of some anime girl voring carrots. Thanks, Jared.
‘The insanely cool Jared Kleinman stepped up and asked me if I thought his mixtapes were lit af, and I said yea obviously, because if you don’t listen to his mixtapes, then you’re a hoe and I’ll fill your nasal ducts with spider eggs.’
Evan was about to delete Jared’s paragraph, but saw that there was more. It looked serious.
‘If we are being real here, I feel glad that we’re friends. Even if I deny it and all, it’s mostly because I am not sure how to accept affection and attention. You’re cool, Evan. I’m sorry that a ton of shit kinda ruined your life, and that things can’t be the same with Zoe. Just so you know, I’ll always be there under any circumstances. Unless you turn your back on me, but in that case, that’s your fault. This isn’t supposed to sound guilt trippy. I’m happy you’ve managed to move on, and I’m impressed that you’ve been handling it all so well. You have been stuttering a lot more lately, and we both know that’s because your anxiety is getting worse. I notice these things. We’ve been pals for a pretty long time and I’m sure that something is on your mind. Or it could be in your subconscious, because sometimes your brain likes to trick you like that and it’s lame as fuck, but it happens. I want you to know you can trust me. Please shoot me a message or whatever, telling me if you’re okay or not. I worry about you.
P.S. I think you are a super gnarly writer. Is that a word? Anyway, you need to make a daily quote book or some shit because that shit you wrote is inspirational. You’re only, what, eighteen? Yeah, fuck you for being so talented. Just kidding, you’re still talented. It’s your fault for hacking into the code of how life works.
Sincerely,
The Insanely Cool Jared Kleinman’
