CHAPTER SIXTEEN
DISTANCE

✦✧✦✧✦

Jackson showed up, Matt—Allison's new stalker—showed up, and the punch-related shenanigans ceased to disappoint that night, the police showed up. And I forgot to mention:

All hell broke loose on that full moon.

When Violet found Allison almost ten minutes later, her phone buzzed with a text from her father. It told her to go to Beacon Memorial. Something had happened to her mother. The Argent girl sighed, "it's probably another one of their stupid training sessions." she said, but Violet could hear the underlying fear in her best friend's voice.

"Go. We'll hold down the fort." Violet reassured.

Three hours later, after Violet had arrived home, there were two texts she hadn't seen yet. One from Isaac, and one from Allison. Opening Allison's message first, she was shocked to see the words on the screen. My mom's dead.

Violet gasped upon reading the message and was about to collect her things and go console her friend when another message appeared seconds later, We'll talk later. I just need some time.

Setting her phone down, Violet couldn't help but imagine how much Allison's world had just changed. Seeing the situation from her own eyes, Violet would never be able to cope if Melissa died. She and Scott would have to go to New York and live with their dad in his cramped apartment, and although the man was sober and holding down a job at the FBI, Violet didn't know her father well enough to have the same relationship she shared with her mother. Looking down at her arm, Violet traced at her scar with her finger. A departing gift, as she liked to  call it.

The door downstairs slammed shut, footsteps thumped up the stairs and Violet's bedroom door burst open, "Matt's the Kanima's master." Scott confessed breathlessly.

Soon following, there was a honk of Stiles' jeep outside and Scott almost left, "Stiles told me not to ask, but do you want to come with us to try to prove to Stiles' dad that Matt is the killer?"

Tired as she was, Violet took hold of her jacket and followed Scott outside anyway. "I told you not to ask her." Stiles said quietly as he sped off towards his house.

"Since when do I listen to you?" Scott retaliated.

After just barely convincing the sheriff that Matt was the actual killer, he drove the three teenagers to the station where they would take a second look at the evidence. Stiles hadn't given as much as a glance to Violet as they made their way there. It was as if she was nonexistent to him.

"Why should I apologize?" Violet caught Stiles whisper to Scott as Stilinski attempted to persuade the night officer at the desk to let them in.

"Because, you are the only two people I hang out with besides Allison and I can't have this minor inconvenience in the way of that." Scott tried.
