CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
HYPERVIGILANCE

✦✧✦✧✦

All was quiet at the station after what felt like an eternity. Self preservation kicked in and Violet and Stiles had stayed in the small room for hours on end. Safe. Together.

The two knew it was over when Scott barged in, his expression was hoping that the two were still in the cramped space. And they were—sound asleep in each other's embrace in a corner. After waking them up, Scott told Violet to get their mom and Stiles' dad from inside the cell room.

"Why can't you do it?"

"Mom knows. She saw me change. I'm pretty sure I'm the last person she wants to see right now."

Upon inspecting the scene, Violet noticed Mr. Stilinski was knocked out on the floor, and Ms. McCall curled in the fetal position on the floor feeling helpless as ever.

Violet managed to find the key and unlocked the cell. Her mother was startled at first, but she could barely hold in a cry to see that at least one of her babies was safe. Neither of them mentioned Scott after managing to bring the sheriff back to consciousness and helped him out of the station. When they met with Scott and Stiles outside, Violet locked eyes with Stiles, her expression telling him everything would be okay.

The McCall's packed into their car and the drive home was silent besides the sound of the engine running. The siblings opted for the backseat, and often exchanged glances. Eventually, pulling out their phones, the two began texting each other.

Scott
why isn't she saying anything???

Violet
why WOULD she say
anything? you wolfed
out right in front of her!

Scott
can we just fast
forward this part?

Violet
I wish

also Isaac broke up with me

Scott
do you want me to fight him?

Violet
no

Scott
I can take him

"Stop texting each other." their mother said from the driver's seat, eyeing them from the rear view mirror. Quickly putting their phones away, Violet and Scott sat for the rest of the car ride in sheer silence.

A few days later it was Monday again. Spring break was over and school was back in session. Violet had barely spoken a word the entire weekend. Not to Allison, not to Scott, not even Stiles. It seemed there was a rift between the "core four".

Violet biked to school that morning, as did Scott. They noticed Stiles' jeep in the parking lot, but neither had said anything about it. They went through the day normally, but during English, Stiles was missing from the classroom. Little did the McCall siblings know, their best friend was having an in-depth conversation with Miss Morrell, the school's French teacher and guidance counselor. Scott and Violet shrugged it off, although they didn't want to. They knew it was best not to pry.
