Chapter 17
I'd let him have it. He could kill me if that's what he wanted; I was done hurting my friends.
Turning my head, he snarled and slowly lowered his snout to my neck, right to the spot where he'd bite and kill me.
Suddenly, a sharp pain hit me in the side and I whimpered-- Hayden. How could I leave Hayden alone, just like that? How could I just give up, concede and leave him in a world of pain? The simple answer was I couldn't.
Fighting back, I threw Dmitri off of me and quickly got back up. My will was renewed, if only by the thought of Hayden, greatly. Snarling viciously at Dmitri, he growled back even louder. In response I let out a deafening roar and he lowered his head only a little before leaping at me. His claws scraped my front shoulder as I rolled away and I snapped at him, but missed.
Getting up before him, I charged and snapped, this time clamping down on his leg. He whined loudly and biting harder, I readied myself to spin and throw him into a tree just as I did with Blake, but he reached around and bit my tail, causing me to yelp and release his leg, allowing him to rise again.
Following suit, I stood and he snarled at me, feral and wild like a true wolf, no sliver of his human compassion inside.
Once again he charged and I jumped up, bringing my paw down on his head-- hard. He immediately crumpled to the ground, back in human form. I shifted back to my own, throwing on my clothes and slowly creeping over to him. Pressing my hand to his neck, I sighed relief when I found that he was still alive.
A shrill scream reached my ears and I immediately took off running to the source of the sound, past trees and over bushes, scrapes forming and healing simultaneously as I ran.
Careening around a large tree, I ran into a hard wall and fell back, shocks exploding all over my body. Panting, I looked up to see Hayden, panic-stricken and crazed.
"It's Olivia," He panted, looking around.
Standing up, I placed a hand on his shoulder, touched by his love for and need to protect his sister, "I'll go, I'm a faster runner. Hold everyone off, keep them away from her."
He nodded and I slid my hand down to his, squeezing it. They reluctantly pulled apart as we went our separate ways and I continued my running through the trees.
I was beginning to recognize the woods, a good sign that I was close to the house. I prayed that it was just a stray wolf and that Gemma had taken care of it and that she and Olivia were okay. I hoped that Olivia only screamed out of surprise and not fear or panic.
My hopes were crushed when I stumbled into a clearing, stopping mid-sprint at the sight before me.
The first thing a registered was Gemma on the ground, blood dripping from her temple, claw marks on her arms, stomach and legs. She was soaked with crimson blood, her blonde hair almost appeared pink due to the amount of blood that was coming out of her body. What scared me more than her mangled body was the fact that she wasn't healing.
"She's not dead," A voice spoke up and my head snapped up to meet a familiar pair of blue eyes. "But she will be."
"D-Dad?" I croaked, my voice raw and shaky.
His face was hard and stony, "It's Alpha Blackburn. You lost your right to call me your father when you stood there to fight with them."
Tears welled up in my eyes, "Daddy, please, just listen--"
"No!" He bellowed. "Now shut up or I kill her!"
I thought he was talking about Gemma until I looked down and found Olivia at his side, a silver dagger pressed up to her throat, her hair wrapped around his hand and being pulled. She was sobbing silently and my heart broke.
"What's your name?" My father asked her gruffly, yanking her hair. She whimpered. He growled and pulled again, pressing the dagger against her throat more, "Tell me!"
"Stop!" I shrieked, "Stop it, she's just a pup!"
He moved the dagger and pointed it at me as I made to take a step closer to him, "Don't come any closer."
"Please stop," I whispered, my hands up in surrender as I took another step.
He held the dagger against her throat again and I took a step back this time.
She whimpered and struggled and he just grabbed her hair tighter, gripping the dagger with more force. I glanced uneasily at Olivia before back up at my father and into his eyes. They were wild and crazed.
He had turned into a madman.
