The movie finished with the two boys still cuddled up together, holding hands still, and both terrified from the jump-scares. Aaron knew it was getting late, but he didn't want Connor to go home, so he quickly came up with an idea.
"Hey um, do you, maybe, wanna sleep over tonight? It's fine with us, and if its cool with your parents then I'd be happy to have you over."
Connor was stunned, a familiar look by now, that still confused Aaron. It really brought out the quietness of his face, and made Aaron wonder how often Connor did things with other people.
"I- I've never slept over someone else's house before. Are you sure it's okay?"
Aaron was surprised, but he didn't want to make Connor feel bad, so he just said "Its fine" and laughed a little at the other boys awkward way of talking to him. It made him happy to see Connor happy, and whenever the two had moments like this, Aaron felt something he'd never felt before, something he couldn't describe.
"I'll ring my Mom" said Connor.
Aaron waited while Connor spoke on the phone, and felt a warm feeling in his stomach when he heard Connor refer to him as "this really nice boy I've been hanging out with". Eventually he hung up and turned to Aaron, with a goofy smile on his face, like a kids.
"She said I'm allowed to stay over. But there's school tomorrow, and I don't have clothes to wear or anything."
"I mean, you could always wear something of mine. They might be a little big on you, but if its cool with you then I don't mind." Aaron said, smiling back at him.
It was late, so the boys decided to get ready to sleep, using the couches as beds and covering themselves with blankets. They were still in all their school clothes, and they lay down on the couch, just talking. Aaron was watching Connor talk, getting lost in his ocean eyes. Looking at the other boy, made Aaron remember that this was the boy getting bullied almost everyday by his "friends", and sadness filled his heart. He asked Connor something he had been wanting to ask from the moment they'd met.
"How does it feel, when they make fun of you like that?"
Connor sighed. "It's just sad, being openly gay in a world full of people like that is not gonna be easy, but I don't know what I ever did to them."
Aaron nodded.
"You're really brave, you know that? Much braver than any of them."
Connor gave him a small smile, but didn't say anything.
Aaron decided it was time to try and sleep, as it was past midnight. He turned over, said goodnight to Connor, who did the same, and shut his eyes.
Try as he might however, Aaron wasn't going to sleep anytime soon. Almost half an hour had passed and he was still thinking. Connor had fallen asleep almost immediately, and Aaron listened to his sleepy murmurs and grunts.
However, after a while, Aaron noticed that the other boys movements became stronger, and almost panicked, as if Connor was uncomfortable or, scared...
He was having a nightmare. As Aaron moved closer to him, he could hear the muttering getting louder and more frantic, but there was nothing he could do.
"Don't make m-me, don't" he cried, as Aaron watched him with pity. It broke him to see Connor like this, and he has to do something.
He quietly slipped off of his bed, and moved over to where Connor was thrashing under his covers. He stood by the couch, and took the smaller boys hand in his own, and squeezed it gently, just to remind Connor that he was there, and that everything would be okay.
