Parental Surprise

It was the next day. Me and Erica were talking while my mom was cooking breakfast. Suddenly, my mom gets a call. I don't think much of it. I just think that it's one my mom's friends. Then, my mom's face goes serious. She puts the food down in front of us and says that she needs to go to another room.

"That's weird," I tell Erica. "Usually if she gets a call, she just tells me to be quiet. She doesn't usually get up and leave, especially not during a meal."

"Then let's go spy on her." Erica hisses. She then notices the unintentional pun she made and groans.

We finish up our breakfast and secretly head to where my mom is.

"Now?" is what Erica and I hear my mom say when we get there.

"Why now? Look, you know Ben just came home from school and that I never get to spend time with him anymore." Pause. "Fine. I'll go on the mission."

I look at Erica in surprise. Unexpectedly, she looks back at me with the same expression. When my mom hangs up, she grabs her coat.

"Where's your mission?" I ask her. She jumps in surprise and turns to me and Erica.

"How much of that did you hear?" Mom gulps, startled.

"We're spies," Erica says. "It's our job to know what's going on when something suspicious is happening." Mom sighs.

"I can't tell you where it is, you know that," she replies.

"Then tell us this: does it have to do with an organization called SPYDER?" I question.

"How do you-"

"Me, Ben, and some of our... friends have faced off against SPYDER plenty of times," Erica informs my mom, cutting her off. "Last time we were on a mission, we had to use a former mole to find SPYDER and take them down."

"Oh," mom mumbles. There's silence for a few minutes. In my head, I start to picture all of the things that could happen to my mom on her mission. She could get blown up by a missile like we almost have. Or she could die in a plane crash like we almost did. She could even maybe get eaten by crocodiles like, once again, we almost did. I was so scared by the thought that I almost puked. My mom noticed this and did the first thing that came to her mind.

"Well, I should go," she told us. "Don't tell anyone about this, please?"

"Of course," Erica reassured her. I assumed she was only saying this for spying reasons. "I'll make sure Ben doesn't say anything either, right Ben?"

I don't reply. Instead, I run straight up to my mom and hug her as tight as I can.

"I'll miss you," I mumble. "Try not to die, okay?" Mom laughs.

"I know. I'll miss you, too," mom whispers to me. And with that, my mom grabs her things, looks at us once more, and leaves.

(A/N) Hello! Sorry for not posting for awhile. I've been really busy. Anyways, if the story seems confusing, I'm trying my hardest. I just started reading "Spy School Goes South" and may not remember parts from other books, so if something is off, don't blame me. (P.S. In one of the paragraphs, there are three references to "Spy School Goes South". What are they?)
