Weeks pass. My mom doesn't come back. Then one morning, I was pacing in the living room, worried. I see a slip of paper slide from under the door. I rush over to pick it up. Here is what it says:
Destroy this note when you are done
There is a mission you two must go on. Meet me at the school at 12:00 sharp.
-Cyrus
"Erica!" I call. I then wonder if there was any use in calling her. She may already be at the school.
However, Erica comes running down the stairs, brushing her teeth. Her hair is soaked, so I guess she just took a shower.
"What is it?" she asks.
"We have another mission," I explain. Erica looks at me, concerned.
"Are you sure you can go on this mission, I mean, with your mom being gone and you not knowing where she is?" Erica questions. I glare at her slightly, giving her the clue that what she just said doesn't help.
"Yes, I'm sure," I say. "Let's go."
Later on, we get to the school. We go into the principals closet and are met by Cyrus and Alexander as usual. But we weren't expecting to see Zoe Zibbell, Mike Brezinski, or even Murray Hill going on this mission.
(A/N) In my version, Murray turned into a good guy at the end of "Spy School Goes South". Remember that I've just started the book and don't know what happens at the end. Also remember that I skipped two books by accident (although I know Murray is still evil after those two), so if anything in this story is off, then that's why.
"What's our mission?" Erica asks, simply.
"Since Murray's here, I assume that it has to do with SPYDER." I infer. Cyrus nods.
"Yes, it does," Cyrus says, sadly. "Our best spy was recently captured by SPYDER."
"Your best spy got captured by those dumbos?" Mike asks. Zoe elbows him.
"Yes," Cyrus says.
"Well who is he? We'll get him," Murray boasts. This earns him a glare from Cyrus and Alexander.
"She's a girl," Alexander grumbles seriously.
"Oh," Murray mumbles. "Sorry." Cyrus sighs.
"That spy is the best, better than me, Catherine, and Erica all in one," he explains.
"That's tough," Mike gasped.
"Yes it is," Alexander nodded. "And this spy is..."
Alexander stops and doesn't say anything else.
"Is what?" Zoe asks. Alexander looks at Cyrus, who nods.
"The spy is Ben's mom," Alexander says hesitantly. Everyone gasps, even Erica, who I thought would have expected this.
My stomach churns. This is the moment I was hoping would never come, but also the moment that I also knew would come. I felt as if I was going to cry. Cyrus turns to me.
"Ben, you don't have to go on the mission if you don't want to," he tells me. "We know this is personal to you."
I shake my head. This is my mom we're talking about, and even if she wasn't my mom, it was a mission.
I look at Cyrus seriously. "Let's do it."
