The day after our doctor's appointment, Joe and I write a statement to publish on social media about the pregnancy. We take a picture of the two of us together and write out our statements as a caption underneath.
"@joejonas and I are excited to announce that we are expecting a baby. We are grateful for your support and hope that you understand why we are stepping away from the spotlight for a while," the statement reads.
The two of us spend time together organizing the spare bedroom to prepare it for a nursery. The room had been used for storage, but now we need it for the new baby.
Gabi comes home late and I immediately feel worried about her. How does she feel about the baby?
I go into her room in the evening to talk with her. The second I step into her room, I notice her pulling down her sleeve over her wrist.
"Gabi," I say, "I feel really bad that your dad and I haven't been spending a lot of time with you."
"It's fine," she replies.
"No, it's not and we are really sorry. How are you?" I ask.
"Fine." But I can tell that she's hiding something because she refuses to make eye contact.
"Gabi," I say in a flat voice. "What's going on?"
"Nothing!" she defends. "I'm just tired."
"Pull up your sleeve," I order.
She hides it well, but the look of terror that crosses her face for a second is one that scared me more than anything.
"I'm fine, Mother," she sasses.
"I won't believe you until you show me your wrists."
She sighs and slides her sleeve up. I only catch a glimpse of red before she yanks her sleeve back down as quickly as possible.
"I love you, Gabi," I assure, "and if you ever need me, please come and talk to me or your dad, alright?"
She nods and I leave the room.
Gabi's POV
I can't believe that Mom paid me enough attention to notice that something was going on. She practically forced me to pull up my sleeves and I did, but I don't know if she noticed anything out of the ordinary. Still, now she's going to go into protective mode over me and I don't need that, not now.
My life has been quite stressful recently and with the baby coming, I don't want to lay it all on my parents. So, no, I won't be asking them for help any time soon; I don't need it.
