" That was sickening! " You heard Mary-Beth phrase, walking up the staircase.
You glanced at the Motel owner who was standing behind the desk, pretending that he didn't witness the wild show outside this building. You snorted mockingly to gain his attention.
" When do we women get serenity and peace in this country?! " He raised his hand in a defensive position, and shook his head, innocently.
" Forget it Y/N, they're all the same. " Mary-Beth added, as you both continued your way back to your room.
You locked the door behind you for safety's sake, and walked towards the window again to have glimpse of the enviroment outside, after the terrible incident that occured recently. But it remained silent, and steamy due the misty air. That's odd, even outside the Saloon where it normally is packed with people, either falling down on the porch, or against the walls due heavy drinking. Or in the worst case, puking on the sidewalks or near the entrance of that building. But not at the moment. A thought hit your brain about that mysterious man, who was he? and what is he up to in that Saloon? you were reflecting on your thoughts, when Mary-Beth cracked your bubble of speculation.
" What are you doing Y/N? " you let go of the shades, and turned around to face her, sitting on the bedside, looking confused. You sat next to her.
" It was close that he almost got you there Mary. If it wasen't for the"unknown" man, you would probably have been abducted or God forbid, even killed! "
" So ,you're telling me that he saved me from that grotesque jerk? "
She laughes briefly while standing up.
" He's one of them, aren't you realising? "
" How can you be so sure about that? " you wondered. She moves her hands on her hips.
" It's was obvious, didn't you mark how cold-blooded he aimed that gun at him, and pulled the trigger? "
She's probably right, but if he really was the way Mary-Beth is assuming him to be, why didn't he execute them right away? you got up on your feet as well.
" But he didn't kill none of you, he only injured him. " Mary shook her head carelessly, and walked her way to the door.
" You're so naive my friend, you still have a lot to learn about men like him. Besides, who really cares? the point is that I'm alive. " She claimed, unlocking the door.
" Where are you going? " you asked, changing the subject hastily.
" Back to my room, and hopefully, get some sleep in peace for once. " And left you alone in your square-shaped walls, with its peach striped, old and worn wallpapers.
You sighed while locking the door behind her, not wanting another jerk to pop up here, you've had enough of action for today. Patiently, you were untying the knots on your dress, let it slide down on the floor, and reached for the long white, cotton nightdress out of your wardrobe to wear. You picked up the fine velvet dress from the floor, and placed it nicely on the chair. From the drawer, you grabbed a cotton cloth to wash your face and neck with. A jug filled with lukewarm water, placed near a copper bowl, that you gently poured in, halfway. Let the cloth soak well enough with water, to later wring it, letting the excess water to stream back into the bowl. You wind up the sleeves on your nightdress, and softly, dabbing and stroking the wet cloth on the surface of your face, neck and throat, repeatedly, when you heard a horse, neighing from the outside. You did a gap between the pulled down shade with your fingertips, only to have a slight view of what is going on.
" Easy boy. "
You heard someone say. Squinting your eyes to get a clearer image. It was the same mysterious man who made a scene earlier this evening, now standing on the road with his horse, apparently. He mounted the horse, and spurred at full speed, then disappeared in the heavy fog. " It's something strange about that man ", you told yourself. " Sly, but exciting. "
The sun rays shone through the shades, and landed directly on your eyes, which woke you up. You strecthed your body, feeling the muscles fibers in your entire body perking up from tiredness. You got up, washing the face, changing your wears, tying your hair into a updo, and secure it with some spare safety pins, that you always strapped on the side of your velvet dress for moments like this. Finally, you wrapped a long, knitted cotton scarf around your shoulder, to protect you from the cold breeze outside. This scarf is very valuable for you, as you've been carrying it ever since, but can't really memorize how, or when you got it. One last look in the mirror, before exiting your room.
The owner of this Motel was reading the newspaper, and switched his gaze at you when he saw you passing by the hall. But, as always ignores you, and the rest of the girls in this place. He was just doing his job, welcoming the customers, take their payments and nothing more. He often remained quiet, and considered himself a higher level than the rest of the staff members and employees here. A man that you gladly liked to avoid in your taste.
The sky was clear blue, and the sun has decided to appear, and welcome you with a warm temperature today. You inhaled, taking in the opportunity that the yellow, joyful shiny thing up in the sky was offering you, and the whole town in Valentine. Builders, workers other folks were outside, busy with their chores and tasks. The town maintained calm after the happening last night, but just for now. You never exactly knew what's going to happen next. You never did, you have to be prepared and observant, always.
" Good morning miss. " You perceived the greeting from a random man, passing by.
" Morning. " You responded, and continued your way to the general shop, not so far away from where you were located.
The shopkeeper was outside his shop, busy sorting the fruits and veggies in their wooden boxes and sacks, and didn't see you standing there. You cleared your throat loudly, for him to hear your presence.
" Ah, excuse me mam, didn't see you coming. What a wonderful day we've got today, don't you think? " He uttered happily, with a smile on his face.
" Yes, I agree sir." You answered, feeling a bit overwhelmed by his joy and cheer.
" What can I help you with? " he asked. " We just received new, freshly fruits and vegetables, from far and near, interested to buy some? "
You shook your head.
" Not really, I came here to ask you something. "
The shopkeeper let go of the sorting, and was staring at you now in an odd way, making you feel uncomfortable. Scanning you with his intense orbs, carefully, from top to toe while carresing his thick, black moustache. Assuming you weren't a lady with high standards or class, by the cheap way you looked and dressed. His gaze became sharp as he snorted abhorrent.
" How cheeky! I'm happily married and got kids at home, now, get out of here! "
For a minute ago, this man seemed to be decent, at least what you experienced, guess you were wrong.
" Are you being deaf lady? get lost before I call for the officer! "
You furrowed your brows, and tighten your scarf around you.
" I'll go by myself! Don't need a supervisor to guide me away! " And with rapid steps, you disappeared from there. " Nasty idiot " you said thoughtfully, as you continued the path, but paused immediately in front of the Saloon. From the outside view, it looked kind of empty, but that didn't stop you from giving it a try, in order to get your unanswered thoughts heard. " Let's try and investigate inside here. " You encouraged yourself, and entered the building.
