The sound of the doorbell interrupted ZhengTing's gloomy morning. Letting go of his phone, the boy went to answer the door.
When he opened it, he was greeted by the person he didn't want to see the most.
"What do you want?" ZhengTing asked dryly. His neighbor looked at him in a daze, he was in a grumpy mood and it was her first time seeing him like that. Snapping out of her daze, Meirong diverted her attention from him to the floor, "I just wanted to say-"
"Keep it to yourself," ZhengTing cut off the girl and shut the door in her face.
So much for trying to be sorry, Meirong stared at her neighbor's door in disgust. Shrugging, she turned on her heel and headed towards her apartment.
Meanwhile, ZhengTing's state was nowhere near Meirong's carefreeness. Xiaoqin didn't reply to any of his messages nor did she pick up his calls, it all made him feel worse. He didn't want to spend his weekend that way, worrying about his relationship with Xiaoqin.
I must get this fixed somehow, he sighed as he checked his phone for any notifications.
And that's how it went for many hours, ZhengTing constantly checking his phone while overthinking about Xiaoqin.
What will I do when we go to work? The thought of going to the company with this small disagreement scared him. The last thing he'd want is some drama to flavor his boring internship days.
Speaking of work, did Meirong find a job yet? ZhengTing found himself subconsciously thinking about his neighbor and without realizing it, a huge wave of guilt crashed into him, was I a bit too mean to her earlier?
No, snap out of it! She's the reason your life's a mess right now, a voice ZhengTing didn't usually hear thundered in his mind. He tried convincing himself, but it was all in vain, for he could remember telling her not to blame her problems on other things or people, and that was exactly what he was doing.
You messed up once, you don't have to mess up twice, ZhengTing thought as he suddenly felt the urge to apologize to her. Wearing a somewhat hopeful smile, ZhengTing left his apartment and headed towards Meirong's.
I wonder how is she surviving without internet? A thought that made him chuckle passed by his mind as he stood in front of her door. Hesitantly, he knocked on her door and, in an instance, Meirong was standing before him.
"What brings you here?" Meirong asked in a rather cheerful tone.
"Err, I just wanted to-"
"Did you have lunch yet?" Meirong interrupted him, an idea popping in her head.
"Not really-"
"Come in! I made enough food to feed a tribe," Meirong chuckled in a silly way as she dragged ZhengTing into her apartment.
What kind of scheme is this? ZhengTing wondered. He found himself seated at a small dining table, several side dishes placed before him. Meirong gave him some rice then sat at the other side of the table.
"Why are you doing this?" ZhengTing eyed his neighbor weirdly.
"What? I can't invite my neighbor over for lunch? What has this world come to..." Meirong shook her head as she piled food on her plate.
"Eat, ZhengTing, it's not poisoned I promise," She said as she stuffed food into her mouth.
Slowly, ZhengTing picked up his chopsticks and began eating. Nothing but silence hung in the air as the two ate, but ZhengTing was quick to change that.
"I wanted to apologize for lashing out on you earlier," ZhengTing cleared his throat.
"It's okay, I forgot about that," Meirong replied dismissively, receiving a silent nod from ZhengTing. More silence lingered when the small convo was over, Meirong was the one to break it this time.
"So, I was thinking," Meirong began, catching ZhengTing's attention, "Yeah?"
"How about... a new deal? If I fixed things between you and that girl, let me use your internet," Meirong suggested shamelessly.
"You know this all happened because you were using my internet," ZhengTing mentally rolled his eyes, this girl can't be serious.
"And because your girlfriend's the best at jumping to conclusions," Meirong muttered.
"What was that?" ZhengTing asked cluelessly.
"Nothing," Meirong smiled innocently.
"Look if we explain everything to her, she would understand and go back to you, and I'll have my internet, everyone will be happy!" Meirong explained excitedly.
"Wait, your internet? Are you-" ZhengTing was cut off by Meirong, "so what do you say, yes or no?"
"I'm not really sure this'll work out," ZhengTing admitted.
"No, I'm sure it will, trust me," Meirong tried selling her idea.
"But-" ZhengTing was about to object more but Meirong interrupted him, again.
"Just give me her number."
