I've never strayed far from my homeland. My past...is riddled with uncertainty. One thing I do remember is that a long, long time ago, I lost something. I'm not sure who or what it was, but I've never felt complete since.
I stay hidden in the shadows, perched high in a tree, observing a human girl below. She looked lost and abandoned, and had been crying to herself for awhile now. Somehow, I felt a pang of empathy for her. I know what it's like to be left behind.
A loud outburst interrupts my train of thought. "HELP ME! OH GOD, HELP ME, SOMEBODY!" a mans voice yells. I look to see him cowering at the sight of a tiny dog. The girl quickly runs over and shoos it away. I roll my eyes. Humans and their antics.
I watch on as he sits down with her. I can't exactly hear what they're saying from here. To my surprise, he suddenly leans over and kisses her forehead, leaving a glowing mark in his wake...the mark of a God. Him, a god? What kind of God is scared of small animals?
I shake my head in disbelief. He was a God...and he just passed on that role to her! Why in the world would he choose a human?
The man stands up and walks away, passing me along his path. He pauses for a moment and I think I see him glance my way, but it could have been my imagination. He soon walks out of sight. I turn back to the human, vaguely interested. The girl squints at the piece of paper he gave to her. I'm usually not usually so nosy, but curiosity overwhelms me. I need to see how this will turn out. Will she really become a new God?
I follow her as she walks along the path, being careful to stay out of sight. Before he gave her the God mark, I could've stood right in front of her and she wouldn't have been able to see me, but now she is a God, and she has the third eye.
We finally arrive at a dingy and broken-down shrine. She gives it a look of disgust, and I sigh in equal disappointment. Was he the God of scams?
"I WAS TRICKED! I'LL NEVER TRUST ADULTS AGAIN!" she yells, stomping back down the stairs.
Suddenly, flames burst out of thin air and block her path, surrounding us.
"Welcome back, Lord Mikage~" a ghostly voice calls out. The girl backs away from the flames, tripping over the steps and falling into the shrine. Flames threaten to touch me, and I leap away as well, finding myself hiding outside the door of the shrine. Some kind of entity must have trapped us in here!
"Why, it's you, Mikage. Where have you been all this?" A deep, menacing voice says.
"Huh?" the girl squeaks out.
"You're finally back after abandoning me for 20 years...I'LL KILL YOU!!!"
I hear the deep voice yell and the girl starts screaming. Right as I'm about to intervene, everything goes dead silent.
