I wake up to Nanami freaking out about something, promptly recalling the events of yesterday. As I blink away the sun shining in my eyes, I become aware of the shrine spirits hovering before us. "Good morning ladies! Now, time to get to work!"

And suddenly we are cleaning the whole shrine. When are for the most part finished with cleaning the inside of the shrine, Nanami slumps to the ground. "Are these really the duties of a God? I haven't even agreed to be the Land God yet..." she says, wiping sweat from her face.

"No, no Lady Nanami! What are you talking about? We need you to take care of the shrine since Master Tomoe is not here. We, Onikiri and Kotetsu, are here to support you, so do not hesitate to ask us anything!"

Tomoe...that guy again. I think for a second. I want to find out more about him. I can't stop thinking about him ever since we met yesterday..."I have a question," I say, "Who is Tomoe exactly? How did he come to be the familiar of a God?"

"Tomoe was once a wild fox! Lord Mikage took him in as a familiar a long time ago. We don't know everything that happened, but Mikage saved him,"

So he used to a wild fox. That explains his arrogant attitude. While I at least have a little more information about him, I want to know more. What did Mikage save him from?, is what I want to ask, but I don't.

With a sigh, I get up and head out to the yard to weed the yard. I slowly pick out the small pests, wondering why Tomoe was so hostile yesterday. It's understandable, I guess. He was expecting Mikage, who hadn't been back home in 20 years. I feel a bit bad for him, despite his rude temperament.

I sit down in the grass, shaking my head. Why am I even thinking about him so much? I could just be deluding myself. Absentmindedly, I pull on a weed at the wrong angle, wincing as the grass blade slices through my hand. I hiss and bring cut to my lips. How did I manage to injure myself on grass...?

"What a useless familiar. She can't even weed the yard correctly. How sad." a smug voice says out of nowhere. I look behind me to see Tomoe...Yeah, I take back what I said earlier about feeling bad for him.

"I'll have you know, I am not a familiar here. I am merely helping since you decided to ditch your own shrine and abandon your duties. If anyone is a useless familiar, it is you!" I exclaim, standing up and glaring at him.

"Tch, whatever. It is a pitiful sight to see a yokai such as yourself running around and serving a human."

"I'm not-" but I decide that it's no use. "Why are you back here, anyway?"

"I came to tell that human girl that she has no chance at becoming even a decent God. You two should just go home."

I clench my fists, knowing that I'm letting his words get to me. I remember Nanami saying that her house was seized and that her father ran away..."You're so insensitive, you rude fox! You don't even give people a chance before you judge them, do you? You have no idea what circumstances Nanami is under. She and I don't exactly have homes to go back to." I say with rage.

"Awe, did someone get their feelings hurt? And over a human, really?" he asks, raising his eyebrow.

"So you must've had a bad past with humans! I have too, you know. But Nanami is a good person. She invited me to stay here out of her own kindness. She has shown me she is fit to be a God!"

He has a surprised look on his face, and for once, he seems to be out of his usual, arrogant demeanor.

"The point is, you have no excuse, even if you dislike humans. I'll be grateful for this place even if you aren't!" I huff and go back to weeding the grass.
