AN AUNTIE AT 14
“Mum! Pippa! Quick come in here!” Paris was calling frantically to us from the bathroom. Mum and I stood from the table and rushed over to her. She was sat on the loo holding a little stick thing. Mum shoved past me and knelt in front of Paris. That’s when I realised it was a pregnancy test she was holding.
“Mum…it’s positive.” Paris whispered. My eyes widened. Paris had only just turned eighteen and she was pregnant already. She didn’t have a boyfriend that I knew of which only made me worry even more.
Mum put her head in her hands and sighed heavily. Paris and I looked at each other; we both knew she was devastated.
To be honest I suppose we should have seen something coming, our family is never calm and happy and well, normal. Recently though we have been, Mum got a raise at work when we all assumed she was going to get the elbow. We’d actually managed to keep up with our rent for the past few months as well and on top of that we were all getting on. So yeah we should definitely have been expecting a bomb shell relatively soon, and here it was in industrial size.
“Oh Paris, what have you done.” Mum mumbled into her hands.
I mean you’d all be thinking she shouldn’t be this upset because there’s always the option of abortion, getting rid of it. But Mum and I both knew that is the very, very last thing Paris would do. She’s very big on helping the homeless and donating to the poor and world peace and stuff so she definitely isn’t going to ‘kill new life’ or whatever she’d call it.
“WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!” Mum suddenly screamed making Paris and I jump. Paris opened her mouth partly then closed it again, deciding against speaking.
“Pippa, go upstairs.” Mum said looking at the floor.
“Huh?”
“JUST GO!” She yelled. I scampered up the stairs quickly, turned the corner and sat against the wall. No longer able to see, but boy will I be able to hear!
“Right let me get this straight Paris. You’re pregnant?” Mum asked suddenly calm again. Her calmness won’t last.
“Erm, yeah.” Paris said obviously wondering about the calmness too.
“Ok, so how?” She asked.
“Erm, Mum.” Paris said sounding kind of creeped out.
“Paris I know how you got pregnant. I want to know by who and how that happened!” She said her voice now slightly raised. I edged slightly closer to the corner since I also was pretty keen on knowing how.
“Right well… so my eighteenth.” She said sighing realising this was the beginning of a story.
“Oh God! You had ‘it’ here!” Mum yelped in disgust.
“No! I would never do ‘it’ when you’re home!” Paris said also in disgust.
“Right, um. Look just continue, so your eighteenth.” Mum said sighing again.
“Well, I’d had a couple of glasses of champagne.” Paris said continuing with her story.
“So I was a bit tipsy to say the least. I went out the front to get some air and there were a couple of guys on the other side of the road…”
“Blimey please tell me you at least know which one it belongs to!” Mum interrupted.
“Mum I’m not a slut!” Paris said sounding irritated.
“Anyway, so there were guys. One of them was leaning against a motor a bike and he looked, well you know, nice. So me being tipsy I went over to them and started well, flirting I guess.” Paris said awkwardly she clearly didn’t think through having this conversation with her Mother.
“Right.” Mum put emphasis on the word like she was craving for the gossip or something.
“Look long story short. The nice looking one-Luke- asked me out for a drink. We went to a pub and the drink turned in to a drink or two the night when on and yes mum we had ‘it’ in a motel up town ok!” Paris said sighing again.
“OK? PARIS, YOU THINK I’M OK WITH THIS? I’VE NEVER BEEN MORE DISAPOINTED IN YOU!” Mum yelled her calmness now completely thrown out the window.
“MUM, I DIDN’T WANT THIS TO HAPPEN AND I KNOW YOU’RE DISAPOINTED BUT THIS IS JUST ANOTHER THING TO ADD TO THE LIST ALRIGHT!” Paris said joining in on Mums rage.
“LIST? WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU ON ABOUT?” Mum said questioning her.
“OH DON’T ACT SO INNOCENT. YOU KNOW WHAT THE HELL I’M ON ABOUT. ALL THE DISAPOINTMENTS I’VE BEEN TO YOU! FLUNKING SCHOOL FOR A YEAR, WALKING OUT FOR A MONTH, HAVING ‘TOO MANY’ BOYFRIENDS AND NOW GUESS WHAT MUMMY! YOU’RE GONNA BE A GRANNY. LIVE WITH IT. MY BABY IS STAYING WETHER YOU WANT IT TO OR NOT!” Paris screamed having an outburst she suddenly started making her way up the stairs. I tried to frantically run to my room but she didn’t care that I was there. She stormed past me and slammed her bedroom door behind her.
“Oh Paris.” I poked my head around the corner of the wall to see mum sat on the floor looking like she was about to burst into tears.
