I forced myself to go and visit Paris. She had been in hospital for six days straight now, I was beginning to feel mean.
Mum was going anyway so I was going with her. I felt sick the moment I saw the car park entrance. She was my sister! For Gods sake why was I nervous?! She was the one in hospital with her extra small baby that wasn't even born. She probably felt like this every single second of the day.
That worked. I near enough marched right the way up to the room she was in. Then I retained myself and delicatley, shakily opened the door.
"Hey! Pippa! Come here!" Paris' face lit up when I was there. Her arms were outstretched for me to hug. I..she looked a bit different. She was Definetly thinner but then what do you expect from the slop they serve here. There was something else though. I couldn't quite figure out what it was in the nano seconds I was standing there before running to her.
"Hi!" I wrapped my arms delicately around her but embraced her all the same. When she finally released me from her grasp I sat down on the blue chair beside her bed.
"Are you alright Pip?" I haven't seen you all week! She was really chirpy for someone attached to a drip and surrounded by bleeping machines.
"Yes, I'm fine! What about... Well how are you doing? You and the baby?" she made a'pfff' sound and ran a hand through her hair.
"Honestly? I feel completely awful." I stared blankly at her, where had that chirpy, upbeat person just gone?
"C'mon pippa, look at me! I'm in hospital, I'm ugly, I'm on the bridge of turning anorexic and I'm supposed to be pregnant! I can tell by your face that mums come home telling you I'm doing great. She thinks that because that's what I tell her. 'I'm great mum, it's actually really nice here!' God, what a load of bull."
I swear she was going to start crying but she looked to angry to even try. I was pretty taken back by what she'd said, mum did always tell us that Paris was doing really well. She rarely said much about the baby though which really annoyed Luke, and me thinking about it. Paris did have a point. She didn't look good at all but I was never going to tell her that.
"Your not ugly Paris."
"Yes I am. I haven't gone anywhere near a makeup bag in over six days, surely that's bad for a girls health?" I smiled slightly at that.
"Paris, you can't beat yourself down. I will admit just to please you, that you've looked better, but that does not mean you're ugly. You need to stay positive for your baby's sake. You need to EAT aswell. Hospital food is like dog sick but it's doing some sort of good to the life inside you, if you don't eat that baby will just get worse. You're going to be a mum Paris, you need to look after them." Paris looked at me for a while like she was absorbing what I'd said. We sat in silence for a while then until she let out a small sentence.
"It's small." I looked at her, she was rubbing her stomache.
"and weak." I looked at her again, her face was beginning to scrunch up a bit. She was going to cry.
"My ovaries or something else important aren't doing something right. So the baby's not growing properly. It doesn't have enough energy or strength to keep up with normal babies. The nurse said its on it's own little pathway to birth...but..."
I took her hand and tried to wipe away her years but more spilled out on to her cheek.
For those next few minuets Paris looked fragile. My big sister looked so small and scared I wanted to cradle her in my arms like shed done to me when I was little. I couldn't though, I was... I don't know... worried that saying something could be wrong.
After a little while her eyelids began to close, I stayed with her until she was asleep then I crept back into the corridor.
