I awoke on a cold New York morning. Surprisingly, it was calm, other than the sound of car horns in the distance. With a sigh, I roll to the side of my bed and grab my phone. When I see the time, my heart drops. I'm late for work. I ran into my pristine kitchen and made myself a cup of black coffee. I always need the strongest things that I could get. Frantically, I got dressed as fast as I could and ran out the door with my wallet barely in my pocket. I got into my car and sped down to my place of work.I walked into work at the break of dawn and right when I stepped through the door, I got bombarded by Ally, my friend since third grade, yelling at me with a case file. She pushed it into my chest, waving her finger at me saying something like, "Review it right now! You said he wasn't going to get out of jail for another three years!" But I don't really know, she was kind of yelling.
"Yes I know that. What's the problem now?" I uttered in a sarcastic, yet calm tone. When she heard what I said, she flipped me off and stomped away, going right toward the police lounge."Ally! Ally Brooke Hernandez get your ass back here!" I exclaimed, catching up to her. She finally stopped in her tracks and looked at me with annoyance. I took one look at the file and I knew what happened.
"Ally, Austin Mahone has been released from prison?" I asked, dumbfounded.
"Yes Lauren! His release is three years early!" She howled, getting so close to my ear I could feel her hot breath. Cynically, she whispered, "Austin Mahone won't be out of jail for long."
With one last look at the file, she turned around and walked away.
I wonder what she meant by that. She has and always will be the kind of person to boss everyone around. Even though I am the head detective, she believes she should be at the top. She's a tiny one as well, but she can be pretty demanding when she tries. Ally Brooke, the blonde rich bitch, always gets her way because they could probably fill an olympic size swimming pool with one hundred dollar bills.About five years ago, we went to a senior party in college. As freshmen, we didn't fit in well but we tried our best to conform. We ended up getting busted for drunk driving. Her parents bribed the police department that I currently work for.
I sat down at my desk and looked at the file. But, somehow, I couldn't bring myself to open it. I felt a force, pushing me, making me get up and walk away.
Every time someone gets out of jail, the whole police force has to have dinner with the inmate. It's the new rule that the 50th president made because "everyone deserves a chance. Nobody's perfect, and you have to learn to accept people's mistakes." No one deserves anything.
I walked out of the warm heat of the police office to the cold winter air. I walk home because I never know when I'm going to feel sick. My doctors are as confused as I am when it comes to my mindset. Every once and a while, I would just black out for no reason. I could never remember anything that would happen before that, and it always terrified me. The human psyche was always something I was terrified, but entranced me from a young age. The way someone feels, how they can do horrible things to people, and not care. That's what's fascinating about the horrific ways of human beings.
When I got home, I started on dinner right away. All throughout the process, my mind was stuck on one thing, or should I say person.
Austin Mahone, the embodiment of evil. Growing up, he was always the type of kid to do peculiar things. He would play with guns, and once, he even brought one to school and threatened Ally and I with it. He was eventually expelled, but he didn't leave us alone. Everyday when we would walk home, he would follow us until the block before my house. When I would get ready for bed at night, I could always see him standing outside my window. I told my father, but he didn't think it was anything to worry about. Eventually, he stopped tormenting us.
About an hour later, about five police officers showed up at my door, with Austin in handcuffs. Austin is a rugged man, has a dangerous stare, and he has brown shaggy hair. He has numerous tattoos that cover his arms. He is built well because he has been in prison since he was eighteen for the murder of his mother. "Hi scumbag. Tell your mother I said hi. Oh wait, that's right." one of the officers pronounced, laughing.
I retaliated with, "alright alright Chris, no need." My brother also works in the police force. His name is Chris. He's about two inches taller than me, and he has blue eyes while I have green eyes. We have the same hair color, brown, and we have almost the same achievements. He never liked Austin because he would always try and protect us, but failed. Chris and I are twins but surprisingly, we don't share the same birthday. I was born on December 24 at 12:04am and Chris was born on December 23 at 11:54 pm.
Guilt flashed through his eyes when he turned to Austin and said, "Sorry man, but you're a horrible person. You will get what you deserve."
I usher everyone to the table and pass out the meal. After we are done, everyone goes home and to holding prison for the night. I fall asleep right after they leave. I can't remember much of the night before. Don't tell. Don't speak. Don't act.
