Nick's POV

I woke up early that morning. Before anyone had woke to get breakfast. I snuck into the long, dark and cold hallway, avoiding the teachers who were out decorating the school for Halloween. I saw a few students race down the hallway and decided that it wasn't too early to be up. I made my way past the cafeteria and down to the lower level of the school that was forbidden to students. I opened the creaky wooden door of the basement and looked around, hearing drops of water land on the stone floor below.

I smelled something. Something rotten. It was a very bad smell. I pulled my wand out of my pocket and just as the room got a bit lighter from the light on my wand I realized that what had been dripping from the ceiling wasn't but the mutant myth dog the older students had been talking about.

I froze, did I fight this dog or did I let it eat me. I couldn't run, the dog would just break through the doorway and run after me. The dog bared its teeth and clawed at the ground below, the chain that tied him to the steel post was too short still to let him get to me.

I exhaled, and before he could bark there was a nose. Sirius.

He let out a terrible laugh, flicked his wand and the dog was a tiny elephant that let out a tiny squeak. I closed my mouth and looked at Sirius when he grabbed my wrist, leading me back up to the main level. "That's my dog. I can sense when he's in trouble, though he really wasn't in trouble...you were"

I scratched the back of my head. "I was only curious, you won't tell Equinox, right?" I asked, and he once again laughed that terrible, evil laugh of his. "Why would I? I was once a young kid like you, curious to see what was down in the cellar. Once, when I came down here. I saw nothing but the plants. Plants in the cellar. They twist and turned..now you may think that is but ridiculous, but they were strange plants that would kill you."

I stared. "Glad it was just a dog then." I laughed softly, making my way to the cafeteria to eat breakfast, the sun shining in the large windows. "Altair and the others should be here soon." Sirius said, and he left to the teachers, the tattoo on his arm revealing everything about him.

I took a seat, my mind racing. Was he going to kill me?
