Moon had known from a very young age that she wasn't cut out to be a sorceress.
Her mother had died giving birth to her, and her father had never been the same after that. He then died a few years later, when Moon had turned ten.
The kingdom collapsed after their deaths and Mewni was chaos with the humans and monsters running rampant and stealing each other's corn... until Eclipsa, a woman who claimed to be Moon's eighth great-grandmother showed up at the castle. She had the power of eternal youth but was feared by all who knew her—because of the Luna Magic she was learning to possess.
But when Moon met Eclipsa, she didn't run away screaming. Eclipsa acted as a second mother to her, and Moon found herself growing to like the reserved lady.
She then introduced Moon to her half-sister that she had been raising all that time—Rain Heinous.
They decided to take over the Royal Castle and made it their home.
Rain was a strange child—she was quiet, but had a very mischievous smile. Eclipsa found her antics cute, but Moon worried constantly and always tried to clean up after her.
Rain was a girl who could get away with anything and sometimes made Moon wonder if they were really related.
"Hey, there's a weird lizard at the castle gates." Rain had pulled Moon away from her Magic studies and dragged her to the front doors. "We should go check it out."
"A weird lizard?" Moon frowned, not having caught on yet. But when the doors opened, she recognized her best friend, Vincent Toffee.
"Vincent, what are you doing here?"
"I came over to see how you were doing. Who's your friend?" He nodded at Rain, who had a rather hungry look in her eyes as she stared at him.
"This is my sister, Rain," Moon introduced. "It's a long story."
"So you're Moon's friend, huh?" Rain smiled. "How did that happen?"
Vincent looked taken aback, and Moon cringed. "Rain, we've been friends since we were little. Our parents knew each other and they often lent us potion ingredients."
Rain's smile grew wider. "You do Magic too? Can I see your wand?"
"Uh... yeah, sure." He took it out of his pocket. It was a slim black handle with a diamond-shaped rock on top. Half a star was embedded inside, and it glowed ominously as Rain held the wand in her hand.
"It's really cool," she said. "Not nearly as cool as mine, but...cool." She handed it back, smirking. "Nowhere near as lame as Moon's though." She snorted a laugh.
Moon blushed and looked down, still ashamed that her wand for some reason was blue and gold and not traditional witch colors like black and green.
"I like her wand," the lizard said.
Moon looked up, smiling softly at him.
"But it's not even dark," Rain whined. Then her face lit up as if she had an idea. "I was exploring the other day and I saw this room in the castle basement. But I can't unlock it—it needs a wand that looks like a Royal wand." She shot Moon a look.
Moon's eyebrows shot to the sky, mouth falling open. "I'm not helping you break an entering!"
"Why not? Are you scared? Why are you so reluctant to show your witchy side, Moon Heinous," she said her full name. Moon stiffened but held her wand firmly. Rain smiled, knowing she had her now.
"Follow me," she growled, stomping down the hall. Vincent followed too, interested to see where this would go. They weaved through passages and tunnels before they came to a door with a single keyhole in the middle.
